Yes a hacker can do that, if let's say for example: Outlook runs on port 110 and a hacker find a vulnerability in Outlook he can use that vulne. to gain acces or do damage to your system. A firewall should be able to tell you if you are being scanned or attacked. You also can block specific ports witha firewall or you can disable ports by disabling a service that is using that specific port.

Ok first of all do netstat (form command prompt either if you are using windows or nix for mac dont know) to see the open ports you have...then in order to close the ports you want just close the services that open them...but you 'd better use one of the links Memory gave you and download a firewall...this way all the ports in your pc will be sort of controlled...none will open without you wanting to none will close without you wanting to....but even at this point you can get hacked..patch reguraly windows and do the usual things (dont download things you dont know, scan your pc for trojans, etc see also tutorial forum)
Is that the place where I am supposed to say sth clever and brilliant so that everybody understands how clever nice guy I am????
