need to learn ftp for sever plzz help

I am trying to make a ftp sever/host "I think that is what it is called" it is where u give someone your ip address they type it in internet expoler and then a sreen pops up asking user name and password. you type that in and then u can download stuff off there computer and so. I have Linux Slackware 9.1. And i would like to know how to do that so poeple can download stuff from me. I heard you can use Apache for this but i dont know how or what to do. If some could teach me how or point me to some truntols. Thanks in advance.

Most linux distributions include an FTP server. I found the man page
on my redhat system: Type man ftpd <enter>

    FTPD(8) FTPD(8)

    NAME
ftpd - Internet File Transfer Protocol server

    SYNOPSIS
    ftpd [ -d ] [ -v ] [ -l ] [ -t timeout ] [ -T maxtimeout ]
    [ -a ] [ -A ] [ -L ] [ -i ] [ -I ] [ -o ] [ -p ctrlport ]
    [ -P dataport ] [ -q ] [ -Q ] [ -r rootdir ] [ -s ] [ -S ]
    [ -u umask ] [ -V ] [ -w ] [ -W ] [ -X ]

    DESCRIPTION
Ftpd is the Internet File Transfer Protocol server pro_
cess. The server uses the TCP protocol and listens at the
port specified in the ``ftp'' service specification; see
    services(5).
Check your documentation. The name of your server daemon may not
be the same as mine, but I'd be surprised if you didn't have one.
The man page tells you how to activate it.
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

If you need everything to be "GUI'd" up for you and all pretty and easy to use, then go back to Windows. I think everyone should try Linux (just to experience it) but it's not the solution for everyone. You have to be willing to work with text.. you have to be willing to get your hands dirty and you have to be willing to learn. There's no difference between text and GUI except that text takes a little more work (although I find most of the time.. it's simpler and always easier to automate). If you have a problem with using a console/text-only app.. then Linux is definately not the operating system for you.... wait until you are a little more experienced with computers... Windows was designed to be controlled from a GUI, Linux wasn't (and hopefully never will be)...

Slack comes with proftpd. For more information on how to install proftpd, go here: http://www.proftpd.org/ .
