XP Passwords
I was wondering how XP protects and stores the passwords. I am assuming it is like NT for the most part except for the SAM file because LC4 can not crack XP. I do not want to know how to crack XP. I want to know the following:
-Is it hashed?
-Where/How is it stored
-Is it like NT with similar restrictions on copying, modifying, etc when NT is running
I did google, but ended up with a ton of password recover programs. :-/
-Cheers-

It's pretty much identical to the way NT treats the SAM, except the encryption algorithm that creates the hash is much more complex.

As a side note, if you connect the box to an older NT domain it could downgrade the security by default to the extremely easy to crack NT style hashing. Hell you don't even need box access to crack that.

There are half a dozen I found on usenet. Put I think the software is worth the money and is a brilliant addition to any e-tool box.

The following statement is correct.
The previous statement is false.

It is possible to gain admin rights as a regular user, yes. How.....um...I seem to have forgotten that....
Why not just have someone with admin rights do it for you by using the runas command?

Wait....um....isn't that what l0pthcrack was always designed to do? What do you mean "cracking LC4". Are you implying that you have attempted to crack a commercial software product to get around paying for product licensing? Shame on you! I'm sure the BSA will love to hear about that!
Besides, you can get an older, free version of LC (pre-@stake) and use it. It's not as quick as LC4, but it will get the job done.
