    looking for...

    Hi all.

    I'm looking for an OS...

I want something that is NOT compatible with anything else.... I dont' want it to be able to run any office suites, or anything like that. I do however, want it to play some sort of solitare.

This will give me more of a reason not to get anything done...

    Thanks all!

If you check my "Looking for a new OS?" thread, I have links to alot of stuff, and some should be pretty damned obscure and almost worthless. Or you could telinit 3

There is an OS I have been looking into more and more that doesn't even currently have a GUI and is written mostly in assembler. You might want to look for that....If I could figure out what in the hell it's called again.

I know... its hard to get a decent amount of butter on them and you're lucky to get 1/3rd of them to pop in the microwave...

Thanks for the links. I'll start reviewing right away!

You might like to look at the RISC OS? It was pretty good for process control and managing scientific equipment/data analysis so it would handle solitaire.

Because it was not for finance/commerce boxes, it should meet the incompatibility requirement.

AFAIK there are only 114 viruses in the world that run on it, so if you wrote another you would be instantly 1337

    Just a thought

Zonewalker: Thats almost perfect... I'll use this as my backup if I can't find anthing "worse".

nihil: I'll look into it. Seeing that I work in a financial institution... that should be "perfect"!!

Thanks guys! I knew I could count on AO

You could give these a try :

    [1]Ground Support Equipment Operating System
GSEOS is an I&T software system for space instruments and small spacecrafts especially suited for low budget missions. It is designed for rapid test system design and high flexibility for changing telemetry and command requirements. GSEOS can be seemlessly moved from FM/EM development to flight operations. It features the Python programming language as a configuration/scripting tool and can easily be extended to accommodate custom hardware interfaces.
I have no idea how you would get this to work on your computer ???

    [2]Inferno
Inferno is a compact operating system designed for building distributed and networked systems on a wide variety of devices and platforms. With many advanced and unique features, Inferno puts an unrivalled set of tools into your hands.
    [3]JNode
JNode is a Java New Operating System Design Effort. It is an effort to make a java OS written fully in java. The goal is (1) to get a new Java OS to play with for developers and (2) grow into a new operating system for modern, small systems such as PDA's, Tablets, desktops etc.
-- This one seems interesting. But haven't been able to give it a run since I need another pc ....

    [4]MenuetOS
MenuetOS is a fully 32 bit assembly written graphical operating system, distributed under GPL license. Menuet supports 32 bit x86 assembly programming as a faster and smaller system footprint.
Probably isn't what you are looking for , but you never you might just find them interesting ........

    Remember, Microkernels are bad.
Why is that exactly? What's wrong with microkernels? (I know what it is)
The above sentences are produced by the propaganda and indoctrination of people manipulating my mind since 1987, hence, I cannot be held responsible for this post\'s content - me

They are HELL to fix. In a monolithic kernel, the kernel is one peice. A Micro kernel is like....A Bunch of servers that talk back and forth to each other. If you look at one, you'll be like, hmm, what the hell does this do? Does it talk to this program or this one? Hmm...

Nasty ****. GNU OS is Micro, I believe Hurd is, Linux and BSD are not.

Micro Kernels are kind of like a network of code. Communicating the information needed to run. Like a WINDOWS NETWORK. If one part goes down..... Heh.
