telnet/gopher
I feel like a real dork for this question:
can someone explain telnet and gopher to me and how to use them?

Don't feel like a dork for asking a question. Feel embarrassed for not using the Forum search in the upper right hand corner and also for not using www.google.com first. There's a ton of info in the threads here and online.

In order to use telnet u need either an IP or web address.
If you are on windows (as i am assuming) go to Start|run. type cmd in the command line. This will take to to ms-dos. From there type "telnet". You will then be in Telnet. After you get into telnet u can type "o"(open). then it will say <to>, Then u will put either the IP address,or the URL. If there is a selected port u want to connect to: you will put a space then the port.
P.S. for further help u can simpily type "help" or sometime "?" in the telnet mode...
