Homemade Embedded BSD Systems

I was just wondering has anyone here on AO every tried to do anything like this ? If you have what are your thoughts and comments on how it went ?

Seems really interesting and that's why I posted the link to see what some of you guys/girls have to say about it. I hope to give it a try once I get enough money to purchase another comp and the necessary hardware for it.
