    my memory

ok i am running a PIII intel with 128MB RAM (RH9)
and she is runnig like a dog compared to other computers with similar spec (even my 8yo iMac with 94MB ram is smoother)
i have checked the memory allocation and there is about 3MB Free see output
    MemTotal: 126056 kB
    MemFree: 3420 kB
    MemShared: 0 kB
    Buffers: 5036 kB
    Cached: 35152 kB
    SwapCached: 40076 kB
    Active: 92020 kB
    ActiveAnon: 57948 kB
    ActiveCache: 34072 kB
    Inact_dirty: 6380 kB
    Inact_laundry: 9276 kB
    Inact_clean: 1248 kB
    Inact_target: 21784 kB
    HighTotal: 0 kB
    HighFree: 0 kB
    LowTotal: 126056 kB
    LowFree: 3420 kB
    SwapTotal: 257032 kB
    SwapFree: 187148 kB

this means 125MB are being used!! is this normal? what do you suggest please do not say buy more ram!!

    cheers
    M

There is an otion somewhere near kernel configuration that's called "overcommit memory"

This should fix your problem. Linux software tends to grab far more memory than it needs, this tricks software into thinking that there is more memory available than there really is, it can occasionally cause problems tho...

how do i get this to work then, does it mean a recompile of the kernel?

After the changes have been made to the kernel, just run the command "make symlinks dep"

EDIT: Any time you make kernel changes, this is a required operation. The system will usually remind you of this.
