    how to assign alias for loopback(e.g, somename.lol to 127.0.0.1)

    Hi,
    I want to know how to assign alias name for loopback address.e.g,. somename.lol to 127.0.0.1 so when i ping somenme.lol it will
    ping to 127.0.0.1.

    1 more thing where the name will be stored.
    like localhost.localdomain. for 127.0.0.1

    You'll need to edit your hosts file.

    On windows NT/2K/XP/2K3 it's located at %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
    On Linux/*BSD it's located at /etc/hosts

    hmmm, there are legit reasons for what you are doing and there are illegit reasons...
    editing someone elses host file is not cool. If oyu want to hard assign a name to resolve to a certain address, fine... but dont be screwing with ppls host files...
    If you are not, my apologies... just since you didnt state a reason to want to do that... sounds fishy.

    thats a pretty standard error message... what do you mean what happens?
    thats "no answer" at the computer you are trying to call on port 80.

    Actully i am a student studying about n/w security.. i saw the link from antionline only.
    it is under newbie security questions advice... there the link is backsun.box.sk/books.html
    I tried that link it shows object not found so that i remove books.html ...

    I donno how it happens any one plz help me regarding the above.

    Are you talking about this , the error message says it all you are following a very outdated links. what exaxtly do you want books on.?

    when i entered the link in my address bar.
    It will show the web page of my local system which is running webserver.

    when i entered the link in the system which has no webserver running.
    It will give me the web page of the web server running in the proxy.
