wtf-ide problems
ok this is the 4th time trying to write this(winblows has crashed that many times in the 3 DAYS IT HAS BEEN INSTALLED-GO FIGURE)
anyway
my hdd is starting to make loud clinking noises from once in a while to every hour on the hour
and i was backing up my cd's on xp home and now both my cdroms are not detected by xp home
i used the powermax utility to scan my bus and they are their and they were working this morning
i also have a multicard reader that is nolonger showing up(usb based)
basicaly the comp has lsot it mentaly and physicaly
xp's fault or motherboard?
if xp how do i fix
if motherboard-i have a replacement
i have recently been using linux non-stop but i need my games and the ability to convert/make mixes on linux so i installed windows and i am regretting it now

I've moved this to Hardware as I suspect it's a hardware issue.

IMHO, sounds like the "click of death" as it's aptly named (usually the arm isn't stable and "clicks" against the core, IIRC). What kind of harddrive is it? Have you moved the computer recently (while running)?

western digital- havent moved it while running
and thanks for moving the thread i often never scroll down far enough/remember this fourm i here

Hi,
First two things to try is a reinstall of Windows XP.........take the "repair" option.
Get the Western Digital diagnostics tool and run that, it sounds as if your HDD is on the way out.

when i repair will i have to re-register with MS?
is the wester digital tool free? i presume so
right now im at friends comp so i wont be able to do much but thanks for the info

Use your friend's computer to create a floppy...........the tool will fit

ok back at home
friend had linux RH9 (my doing-i spred the word of the almighty linux to my small town)
would my hdd cause it stop my cdroms for showing up? if so il ghost this hdd into my 20gig

that program proves it
just 10 seconds into the quicktest program it failed
im gonna drop in my 20 gig and use norton ghost to copy it over
