Which OS? Pre-OSX or OS X?
If it's OS X, you might want to look at Snort on Mac. The website this link is at also tends to be heavy for support for various Macintosh Security items and might help narrow your search down to others.

I downloaded it but gcc doesn't want to compile it. Any suggestions?

Take a look at HenWen which is a free GUI for snort that runs great.
