Security Schools

I have been kicking an idea around for a while. A lot of people on all the forums are very skilled in preventing viruses and giving advice on how to prevent them. Yet most persons on the internet know very little. Most just barely know enough to get on the internet. Take a look at your aunts and uncles that are on the internet. How many of them, unless you taught them, know about viruses, trojans, spyware or anything else that can harm their computers? If they do not know, how come we are not teaching them? If 100 of us taught two of our relatives about security, that would be 200 more persons who would have knowledge. The same goes for our friends.

What about schools? Most school districts are on the internet, yet I know that even their repair people do not know about security. I know a few of them and when you talk about trojans or viruses, they give you the look of: "What the heck are you talking about?" I had one call me not too long ago and said that he had to deadline about 30 computers because they would not run anymore. I told him to bring some over to my home with his hardware and we would hook them up and see what happened. All were filled witrh adware, viruses, trojans, etc. Nothing else was wrong with them. We cleaned them up, and I told him about spybot, adaware 6, and a few others. I told him to download them to a disk and keep them updated. Of course, it seems like adaware 6 keeps updating every day. The County Government went nuts when the nsaky? worms hit. Every one of their computers got infected and they told the newspaper that the computer users did not know how to prevent this from happening. These computers basically stay on 24 hours a day and plugged into telephone lines. How much adware are they sending out?

If we started schools with fees just high enough to support classes, think of what we could do. In two nights, we could teach more people about security then what we have now. How do you drum up support? That is where the fees come in to advertise. How many of you know high officals in local county government? How many school superintendents, school administrators, or school board members do you know? How many city officals do you know? I believe if we can get out there in the public and let them know what we are doing, we can sure go a long ways in defeating these parasites that get on our computers.

We have the knowledge and I know that in my area we have no one doing this. Remember, this is just an idea and this would be your business. If you think this is a good idea or bad idea, let me know. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

Did not think of it that way Simon. But would not be just a good a job? Charge your usual price and give them a card telling them you will teach them how to stay secure for the same amount of money.

Besides maybe math everything I ever learned was outside of a school. I have never taken a computer related class in my entire life. But I would seriously feel sorry for a "security class" that has nothing to show except... hey look at this malware, what it does ladies and dudes is (insert method of propogation & payload). In the end what will they leave with? The knowledge of knowing the importance of haveing AV around? Go a little to in detail and you'll only end up on the local news as a guy who inspired ten year olds to form a VX group.

lol specialist, your right, but you guys have to keep in mind, security classes already exist. But they dont only teach them the importance of having anti malware programs, they also teach you hacking tactics. According to them you have to be able to hack to defend against it, and they are for the most part right. But lets be honest, how many people do you think go to those classes just to be more secure??

But the truth of the matter is the real world cares about money not security, so talk money before security. It's just how things are.

Okay guys. So far everyone is against it. Would it still not be a good idea to teach your relatives and friends? Somewhere alone the line, if spyware and viruses keep this up, how long will it be before every one is disgusted and decide to get rid of their computers? A lot of people are already doing this. Where would be the internet then? Providers will have to charge a lot of money to the persons left just to make ends meet. What then? Are you willing and able to pay high prices for the internet? I can't.

The thing is, there will always be computers, its just the way it is. Computers are the present and they are certainly the future. People will never go back to the old days of just paper and pencil/pen. It's to inconvenient and cant keep up with the advancing technology of computers. Its just like what happened like 80 years ago. Companies who made shoes by hand couldnt keep up with companies who made shoes by machine. There for the companies that made shoes by hand either had to change or went out of business.

erm.. some securtiy certificate provided by some Uni or training center are actually useless! like Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker, even CISSP that conduct by some unresponsible training center~!! those trainer or lecturer are actually being trained to conduct class only~! some even have no real industrial working experience, not to mention experience in hacking or couter measure~!! what the trainer do is conduct the class through powerpoint slide, and just keep trying all the tools~!! Example in CEH course, they give u a CD with more than 300 tools (mostly trail version) and keep testing on those tools. If 1 didnt work then immediate jump to other tools.... lastly all can't use (maybe is the lack of skill to used~!) , they will said, the import is let u know the concept~! aiks~~! >_<

some even funny, keep looking down and saying how bads and un-ethical are those script kiddies... themself keep using those tools to demo and test... really feel like being cheat after attending the CEH course~! 22 modules, they just cover up to 15 only.... giving lots of excuse of cannot perform like wireless hacking, novell hacking, linux hacking ...

after attending that course, i felt disappointed for those similar course ledy, rather spend more time doing own research and testing myself...
