ActiveX - a boon or a bane?

Should have added that step 3 isn't quite how IE v6 works.

When you get to Tools | Internet Options | Security | Custom Lvel , you have a number of options relating to ActiveX.

You have 5 ActiveX options, and you can set all to disabled if you don't want to use it at all.

The first 2 deal with downloaded ActiveX controls - I'd recommend setting it to disabled for unsigned controls, and prompt for signed ones.

The last 3 deal with actually running ActiveX code, which again you should set to disable, prompt, prompt.
Which means every time ActiveX does something, you are asked if you wish to proceed.
This can be annoying if you are using ActiveX for lots of things, but shouldn't cause a problem for a normal home PC.

As an example, I always disallow ActiveX when using this forum.

Sorry about the IE6 part. I havent upgraded to it. All new stuff havee some or the other loopholes in 'em. So I'm sticking with 5.5 for now. Did you see the release of the new phpbb. It had a dozen loopholes in it. See what I mean.

Anyway, when you select disable activeX also, it prompts the user that "This page has ActiveX contraals which have been disables accd your settings. So the page may not appear properly." So it doesn't make much of a diffrence

I'd have to disagree a bit on that point.

If ActiveX options are set to prompt on what are supposed to be the safe options, then it gives you a choice.

For example, Windowsupdate and a lot of AV updates require ActiveX to work correctly.
So you can reply yes to these two (assuming you trust them!), and no to everything else.

You never know whats behind the curtains, a soft pillow or a soft pillow with a gun behind? If youre sure you want to do it,you can always just goto the options enable it and come back. But It still is your choice. I gave the what you call as a "factory default" for Extra security.

I'm not really disagreeing with you, but the advantage of using prompt is that you don't have to reset your IE settings.

Depending on what you are doing, and the web site you are looking at you can choose what you wish to do.
Which would normally be no, disable ActiveX, but might be yes, depending on the site.
