finding AOL AIM messages in cache?

My child has been using aim and there has been accusations about language and other inappropriate statements online. I'd like to see these IM conversations and know they must be cached on my computer (Windows XP) somewhere. Please help me find them. and then of course, I'd like to view the contents.

    Thanks!

Acctually no, I have no knowledge of anything like this. However, to prevent any future dispute, you can install a Keylogger. This will solve your problem. If there is any such cache, I would like to know about it.

Nope, pretty sure they aren't cached. At least with the standard client. I think Gaim does logging, as well as deadAim, and trillian (does trillian work as aim?)

Sounds like you need parental software instead.

aim does NOT keep a cache of conversations.

yes trillian does work as aim, however, i am not sure how secure trillian is. i personally do not use or trust the program, and have had many debates with people about this issue. some swear it is just as secure (insecure) as the authentic aim program, others claim it is open to exploits in the aim functionality.

my philosophy: when in doubt, don't use it.

as dr toker suggested, a keylogger could be a solution. also, some network sniffers could allow you to actually monitor the conversation from another computer on your lan in real time if you wanted to go that route. i have to ask though, why do you want to monitor your child like that? in my opinion, that is the same effect as tapping their phone line. sure it is good to be a concerned parent, but some privacy is also needed for a growing child. if this is not to monitor your child, but instead to monitor the people your child is talking with, then just ask your kid to not close the window next time. you can then copy and paste the conversation into notepad and save as text file if you need evidence of harassment and such.

also, there is an option to timestamp conversations within aim, which is a good function to have enabled if you are trying to log anything.

Keyloggers are OK, but most (free ones) will only capture one side of the conversation. The last time I looked, AIM had logging capabilities so why not simply turn that on and capture the whole conversation?
