Thread: Linux sound problems

    Linux sound problems

I use a soyo mobo, with integrated soundl. The docs say its AC97 6 Channel Audio codec. So far, with Knoppix, knoppix STD and DamnSmall Linux, I have had problems with my sound volume. Whatever sound I play, it plays at 100% volume. So in XMMS, with the volume adjuster turned as low as possible, I still get 100% volume. I have no clue where to get started trying to config, or fix the problem, or whatever. I was hoping someone could offer some advice if they ran into this problem before or they just know it off the top of their heads...

    Thanks a bunch

I often use the ac97_codec and the i810_audio driver. They seem to work just great.
Can you give the output of an lsmod here ?

Also check you system-volume control. It might be locked at 100%. I think that overrides apps like xmms.

Sorry I took so long... I don't know how to copy paste from the terminal!!!

So I took a screenshot... I hope it worked. If not.. I'll take a actual screenshot with a camera.

    Hey shrekkie... I'm a dumbass...

Where does one go for this?
    check you system-volume control.
im in damnsmall linux on fluxbox, the only volume controls I have found are in slit and xmms, and neither work. Thanks for the response!

    Soda,

If you're in bash, to copy/paste elsewhere, just select, and hit the two mousebuttons or the scrolling wheel where you wanna paste it.
Btw don't bother about not knowing, been there done that

Anyway this is weird indeed ...

Try Xine instead of XMMS, I always have these samll problems with XMMS and I just ended up giving up on it.

.: Shrekkie :., The report is similar in that it uses max volume, but it sounds like that user has found a workaround for it. I have no workaround, and so far all software (games and such) have done the same "permanent max volume" thing. So xine isn't a solution, unfortunately. I have a feeling I just don't know how to adjust the volume properly, xmms doesn't work, so I'm hoping someone could rant off the ways that one could change the volume...

Try to check what he effectively sees as hardware ... Maybe we can find a workaround with another driver. Can you give here also some more specs of your mobo ?
Also a "dmesg | more" can reveal alot of your hardware information.

If you don't have "lspci" , here you can get it : http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~mj/pciutils.shtml
