    You may not have control over the content, yet. You could have the students submit their assignments with a copyright clause as part of the assignment. It would be worth your time to consult with someone that has legal expertise with copyrights.

    Alright, I'm trying to guess here but...

    One of your students might have some spyware on his/hers computer. That might have stolen his/her cookie. Armed with that cookie some webcrawler came in and hijacked his/her session and crawled all over your site.

    Could it also be possible to deep-link into your site? Thereby bypassing the logon page?
    I mean if you know where it's stored do you need to logon? Then some student again could have some spyware that send the deep-link to a webcrawler.

    I may not be right but then again this scenario isn't unrealistic...
