1st battle.net (warcraft 3) should work without issue on most NAT configurations but may need some ports opened.
The following ports are required for Playing games on battle.net (warcraft3)
4000 TCP.UDP and 6112-6119 TCP and UDP
If your buddy uses broadband and uses an Internet sharing device, you will have to
have the above ports open on the firewall/router and have the traffic forwarded back to
the workstation running warcraft 3.
Windows NT 4.x does not include a firewall. As some have stated, a 3rd party software
firewall may be running..Make sure you check that.
If it turns out to be an issue with a router/firewall device, post the make and model and we can offer suggestions about configuration.

since your bud's on Nortron AV,I dont see how it'd affect your gaming options..and since it's his computer,and I'm assuming he's got admin..couldnt he just allow the process rather than disable the firewall?It's there for a reason y'know...

did you have a firewall running on the linksys router? if this is the problem, then you should put your system in the DMZ, this is for people wanting to play games on the net, so that is his/her computer isn't behind the firewall anymore but in the DMZ.
let us know...

If he has NIS, you should configure it to allow W3 to go thru it and reach battle.net. Does he can connect to battle.net?
To do it on NIS, just start W3 and try to connect to b.net. NIS will prompt (if was not denied permanently before) asking if you allow this access. Answer yes. Done.
If someone answered NO and create a rule to avoid b.net connection, go to NIS and delete the rule and try the previous paragraph again.
Of course he has a valid license of W3 and its other than yours, right?

I actually have 2 warcraft 3 keys myself since we do a lot of LAN parties and there is always someone who either forgets to bring a copy. So cd-key is not the issue, but just got a program from someone on here who emailed me a program that makes bots make games and sits on invisible requires another key, but I got plenty (note, its from clan members and friends who are on WoW and don't play WC3X no more)
