bballad I am scared to death of the day they anihilate one another. It will happen if either government is ever toppled. And then all these other countried will say "**** that was easy, let's launch ours." We don't have the support to eliminate an easy target let alone, Pakistan and the host of other coutries that spit in the United Nations face even while they use the organizations as a crutch to further their own internal agendas.

Turkey has also had a female prime minister; Tansu Ciller. Turkey and Iran or as different as a small town in Arkasas is to Tokyo.

No arguemnt on turky....shouldbe our best friend in the area, and they have the troops with the experience and the balls to stop the iraq insurgance but they would happely wage a war of genocide on the kurds when we leave the area...so would iran....what we are looking at as a worst case is that the kurds decide they want an empire and try to carve it out of iraq/iran and turky (this isn't too unlikely)leading to the iranians and the turks pouring over the border...things get real ugly from there

The hatred of Turkey to the Kurds isn't as black and white as you see. They have internal striffe within the government. Turkey has a HUGE population of Kurds, they are about as likely to commit genecide as we are to minorities. The govenment does attack and destroy PKK strongholds. But the PKK has a tendancy to knock off business executives all the time.

I don't think the current developments have anything to do with the Kurds.

Sure, the Kurds would ideally like their own state, but are unlikely to rock the boat, as they are likely to get a high degree of autonomy in the new Iraq.

Iran is increasing its troop strength on the southern border, which is as far away the Kurds as you could get!
Which, incidentally would bring them into conflict with UK forces, not the US.

This comes down to the fact that Iran has most of its support in the south - because the Muslim creed they support there is the same as in Iran - i.e. Shiite, not Sunni like in the north.
And these two creeds hate each other, in much the same way that Protestants and Catholics have killed each other in Northern Ireland.

Iran would love to annex part of southern Iraq, as for example Basra has huge strategic importance - did anyone mention oil ??
