Size of image in signature

I've been working on putting an image in my sig, how small does it have to be? The one I have been working on is too big and the forum software will not accept it. I did a site search and found no information on the size limits. Can it be an png? Any info? Thanks.

300x50pix. Yes I think it can be png.

Signature Limits
- 4 lines or less
- 3 pictures/smilies or less
- Images: 300 x 50, gif/jpg/png
