How to integrate and deploy Service Pack 2 for Windows XP

How to integrate and deploy Service Pack 2 for Windows XP

This tutorial will teach you how to integrate Service Pack 2 for Windows XP into a bootable CD and how to deploy a quiet installation from your network. This tutorial applies to XP Home and XP Pro.

    You’ll need :
    1) An original CD of Windows XP
    2) A file call cdsector.bin that will make the CD bootable that you can (Download here -- http://www.generation-nt.com/dossier...0/cdsector.bin -- ),
    3) Ahead Nero. (I use version 6)
    4) The full version of Service Pack 2 ( Download the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers )

How to integrate Service Pack 2 into Windows Original CD.

    1) Created a folder on your hard drive name c:\CDXPSP2 and copy all the files from the original CD of Windows XP into the CD. Be sure that you do not miss any hidden file.

    2) Rename the exe of Service Pack to XPSP2.exe (You’ll understand later on)

    3) Start your command prompt and go the directory where you save the Service Pack.

    4) If you follow the step 2, type ‘XPSP2.exe /integrate:c:\CDXPSP2’ . If you copy the file from the original XP CD to another directory, change the c:\CDXPSP2 directory for your directory. (Do you understand why you rename the exe now?)

    5) If everything works correctly, the SP2 will integrate himself into the c:\CDXPSP2 folder and you’ll have a message at the end.

    6) Exit the command prompt.

Note: A file Spslpsrm.log will be created in your %systemroot% (Usually Windows) folder with the log of the integration. You’ll also see a new folder created name cmpnents who contain the .Net Framework and stuff for Tablet PC.

How to burn a bootable CD.

    7) Open Nero and created a new ISO. Choose CD-ROM (Bootable) and in the ‘boot’ tab, choose the image files ‘cdsector.bin’ that you download at the beginning.

    8) Turn on the ‘Enabled expert Setting’. Choose the following setting:

    Kind of Emulation: No Emulation
    Boot Message: Nero Boot-Loader V6.0
Load segment of sectors (hex!): 07C0
    Number of loaded sectors: 4

    9) In the tab Label, type the label your want for your CD. Click the option to use the ISO9660 text for Joliet. Then press the ‘New’ Button.

    10) Drag all the file from your ‘c:\CDXPSP2’ into the new compilation you just created.

    11) Press the Burn Button, and then check in the boot tab if the settings from step 8 are still there because Nero is good to forget them. Then write/Finalize CD the CD with the burn tab.

You are done! If you cannot boot from the CD, make sure your CD-Rom is bootable and your Bios is configured to boot from a CD-Rom.

How to deploy a quiet installation from your network

    1) Start your command prompt and go the directory where you save the Service Pack.

    2) Type ‘XPSP2.exe /x:t:\NetworkXPSP2’ where t:\NetworkXPSP2 is the folder where you want to extract SP2.

    3) In the same folder that your extract the SP2 from step 2, created a ‘bat’ file name AutomaticSP2.bat.

    4) Edit the file and type in ‘t:\NetworkXPSP2\i386\Update\Update.exe /Q /ForceRestart’

    5) Run the AutomaticSP2.bat file on all your PC. (You need to be administrator locally to install Service Pack 2)

I'm bumping this thread to remember that you can do the same integration of Windows 2003 SP1 into Windows 2003 i386!

Download Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
