"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings,
Look upon my works ye mighty, and despair"............
and to all uber 1337 people reading this: action produces reaction, and behaviour has consequences............
There is no such thing as a free meal nor an innocent bystander........
Cynical??? moi????

EDIT: "rusticate them, rusticate them"
sorry..........guess I went to one of "those" (ivy league) universities

I dont think they should be expelled if no data was damaged and nothing is missing, maybe in the future some other hacker would have found the way in and used it for bad purposes...i think a week or so suspension would be enough, or justt he 500 fine.....

Firstly, let me point this out:
1. This story is MONTHS out of date. Even the BBC news article came out in July - and it was old news then.
2. These losers "exposed" "critical flaws" in the University's network to a "Student newspaper" (aka bogroll)
Basically what they did is do a common attack using their legitimate access.
They got some images without authorisation, including from some security camera or something.
They then made outrageous claims about how this could be used to launch nuclear warheads, change grades, hack the porter's lodge, etc (In Oxford terms, these are increasing orders of severity). None of them was remotely true.
They are total losers, and deserve everything they get, and plenty of things they won't get. I don't know if they've been kicked out, but it seems quite likely.
