Tracking by IP address..
Hi..
If a site says its gonna record the IP address for unauthorised usage(using someone else's password)and sends it to the authorities. Can the unauthorised user be caught?
Whats the chances of getting caught? say if the user is in another part of the world.
Do cases happen whereby the law extends its reach to anyone in any country?
What kinda offence or possibly, crime u might say would this be?
thanks.

sigh
Yes, they can trace "someone". Punishment and extent of law, I would say, would depend on local law.
Not sure on the level of offense or crime, depends on what said person did with that password I guess.
Can you clarify as to why you're asking? lol.. seems suspicious.

Yes,
We caught a couple of perps locally based on information supplied by the FBI............child pornography.
There is an organisation called INTERPOL.............international police federation............if your local police are in that then you will get caught. Extradition is a different matter of course, but you have probably broken local laws as well?
Terrorism is another obvious candidate.
Cheers

If they want to trace you they will trace you.It doesn't matter where you are, what kinda internet connection you use(broadband or dial up,legal or illegal, tax paid or non tax paid)...etc.
What are the chances that you won't be caught .................Well it depends say your country doesn't have a extradiction treaty with the concerned country and your religion as compared to the concerned country's major religion etc.
Using proxy is no help i believe .
guessing by tone of your post i believe that you have committed some kind of cyber crime from your computer and now you are concerned whether they will catch you or not .
Well if that is the case i can tell you one thing they know who you are or they can find out who you are when ever they want to.

So, lemme drop my RX in here..
Computer Crimes are a realativly new concept, and the law makers have had trouble locking down a penalty. I do know that if you cause Monitary loss of up to or over 5000 thats a federal offence. And you can bet your ass you will be tracked down. Or if its a government login, like say your logging into FBI.GOV or something, it may be considered a terrorist act of war, under the new patriot act.
But if I WAS going to do something stupid like this, I would go to a remote place with phone access and use a random dial up account that WAS NOT registered to me. Then get the **** out and hope thwy had no cameras. But even then... you would prolly get caught.
So the moral of the story is, "Even though we CAN do things, doesn't mean we should."
And thats my dose of reality.
It is better to be HATED for who you are, than LOVED for who you are NOT.

Directional antenna, unsecured WiFi, spoofed MAC, you get the picture.
Local PD will pick you up for loitering.

You will get caught. Inter-country may make it a little more difficult, but surely your ISP will be geting a call, and you may get banned from that ISP.
