Question Campaign seeks to defang Rafa's hacker image

Family and colleagues of a Venezuelan security expert accused of defacing Web sites under the name "Rafa" launched a campaign on Monday to highlight their view that the one-time vandal has reformed himself.

You have to wonder what this guy was thinking setting foot in the US, he pissed off the USAF and NASA, did he think they'd forget about him???

The question arises, does the amount of good someone has done compensate for what he has done wrong?

There are lots of stories of how people have turned their knowledge from evil to good, I'm sure a few on this site. Do you think someone has to pay for their crime, ie jail, fines etc, before the slate is clean or can they simply make ammends by helping others?

In this case he hasn't been convicted of anything yet but if they prove what they're accusing him of, he has to do some time.

    Your thoughts?

If he committed a crime and was caught, then he must pay the consequences.

If I rob a bank and then feel bad and set out to help stop other people from robbing banks... does that mean that I should not pay for my crime?

IMO, its the same thing. Damages were done. Someone has to pay for the damage.
The courts have to decide just how you will repay the damage... jail? community service? etc.
It is not up to the person who committed the crime to decide how they pay it back.

I guess thats why they often give comunity service for a punishment of a minor crime?

Try egging a police car... and see how fast they serve you with community service washing the Local Police Depatment's fleet of cars twice a month for a couple months. Not that I know from experience or anything...

Or graffitti... see how quick you'll be scrubbing and painting over the "crime" of another.

I'm with foxman on this one. It's nice that he's "reformed", but you still have to take responsibility for what you've done.

resposibilty for what though backing up index.* whatever and replacing it its just vandelism people dont persecute hackers for what they have done its for what they think they can do RaFa knows more **** than 98% of this form and talent like his shouldnt rot in a ****ing cell he should be rewared not persecuted thats why i hate the white hat culture i will leave you with the new manifesto

It happened again today. Another one sold out, sacrificing their dreams
    to the corporate security machine.

Damn whitehats, noone believes in a cause anymore.

Another bug was released today to the security mailing lists.

Damn Whitehats, they know not what they do.

Another potential computer genius was relegated to an existence of nothing
more than than a 9-5 cubicle-dwelling promotional tool.

Damn whitehats, putting money before discovery.

Another family was ravaged by cooperations and governments bent on
instituting control over individuality, monitoring every action..

Another kid was sentenced today for searching for a way to understand
the world. Convicted and imprisoned, not because of what he did, but
because of what others thought he could do.

Damn Whitehats - Fear keeps them in business.

The public, believing anything it hears from "reputed experts". Screaming
for blood. Looking for something to blame for their lost hope. Their
lost ability to seek out new knowledge. Fear consumes them. They cannot
let go of their uncertainty and doubt because there is no meaning. They
seek to destroy explorers, outlaws, curiosity seekers because they are
told too. They are told these people that seek information are evil.
Individuality is evil. Judgment should be made based upon a moral
standard set in conformity rather than resistance. Lives are ruined in
the name of corporate profit and information is hoarded as a commodity.

Damn Whitehats, you were once like us.

I was a Whitehat. I had an awakening. I saw the security industry for
what is really is. I saw the corruption, the lies, the deceit, the
extortion of protection money in the form of subscription services and
    snake-oil security consultants.

I wanted to know, I wanted to understand, I wanted to go further then
the rest. I never want to be held down by contracts and agreements.

You say I should grow up. You say I should find better things to do with
my time. You say I should put my talent to better use. You're saying I
should fall in line with the other zombies and forget everything I
believe in and shun those with my drive, my curiosity, tell them it's
not worth it, deny them of the greatest journey they will ever
    experience in their lives.

I am not a blackhat. The term is insulting, it implies I am the opposite
of you. You think i seek to defeat security, when I seek something
greater. I will write exploits, travel through networks, explore where
you are afraid to go. I will not put myself in the spotlight and release
destructive tools to the public to attract business. I will not feed
the fear and hysteria created by the security industry to increase stock
prices. I can, and will, code and hack and find out everything I can
for the same reasons I did years ago.

I am a Hacker, dont try to understand me, you lost all hope of that when
you crossed the line. You fail to see the lies and utter simplicity
behind the computer security industry. Once, you may have shared my
ideals. You fail to see the fact that security is a maintenance job.
Youve given up hope for something better. You fail to see yourself as
worthless, fueling an industry whose cumulative result is nothing. I
dont hate you, I dont even really care about you - If you try to stop me,
you will fail, because I do this out of love -- you do it for money.

This is our world now.. the world of the electron and the switch, the
beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without
paying for what could be dirt cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering
gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us
criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We
exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias...
and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you
murder, cheat and lie to us and try to make us belive it is for our own
    good, yet we're the ciminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of
judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My
crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive
    me for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You can't stop me, and you
    certainly can't stop us all.

My personal take on jail and crimes is that jail should be used exclusively for those who commit violent crimes...I don't see any benefit otherwise...

non-violent crimes should be dealt with by other means...and there already are various options available...and options not even yet considered...from community service to house arrest to confiscation of goods to half-way houses, etc...

however, when it is perfectly clear that a person has in fact been reformed beyond any doubt it does not benefit society in any way to punish him just for the sake of payment...in fact, it actually may do more harm than good...

punishment must ultimately serve the best interests of society...provide a particular benefit to society...such as making it safer, as in jailing violent offenders...or, compensated, as in making the non-violent criminal pay through labor or loss...

it does not serve society to punish the reformed...it could even be detrimental in it's effect. From a philosophical perspective: when someone is truly reformed he is, in essence, no longer that person...the person you want to punish no longer exists.

    But...that's just my opinion.

Eg....How does one gauge whether someone has TRULY reformed or is just playing the role to get out of having to take responsibility for their actions?

Prod: Seems to me Rafa's a big boy and he should be proud of what he did, if he is truly commited to his cause. It's a shame that he should shun his mantra just because of the slight threat of going to jail. Where's the conviction? I mean, besides at the end of his trial.

Maybe I just don't understand the whole "* hat" issue. I come from the school of thought that if you want to bring down "the man" then you certainly don't do it wearing one of his monikers.
