but to use a non graphical 'normal' boot you need

boot: somekernel vga=normal

or

boot: ohnokernel vga=ext

for the HR text mode

man lilo.conf

in your shell will give you some more info on the vga= option (allmost at the bottom)..

Or you could simply make another entry that doesn't use the video or the initrd for that matter. Plain text assured
