    Vote for your favorite applications!

This is a neat idea I had for everyone today so I'm going to run with it. I've decided to have a contest similar to the insecure.org top security tools list.

So here is what you do:

Reply to this thread with what platforms you use, and a top 10 or so list of tools you use in the following categories:

    Security

    Networking

    Misc

If you can't name a full 10 for each don't worry. The top security tools should actually be related to security in some way. For example Nmap and Firewalls you may use.

The Networking tools should be actual network tools, like IP Sorcery, Hping, Ethereal, and iptraf.

Misc is for apps you use every day that you can't live without. Like XMMS, Mutt, PowerPoint, Vim, Emacs and so on, and don't have much to do with security or networking so to speak.

I'll leave this open for everyone for a while so everyone has a chance to reply with their picks, and then I'll go over each reply and each tool and make a list of the top 10 or so, and if this gets really big with a lot of replys, then well, I'll make it a top 30 or so.

Then you all can vote on the tools listed you like the best and the "winner" can... Have some APs from me or something.

If you use more than one OS, make sure to make two lists if the apps aren't cross platform.

At the very end I'll do a write up of the tools listed and submit it to Jupiter for examination and maybe publishing if they like it.

    So Have fun,

    gore.

You mean things more important than bash?

    end Joke;

But seriously, this will most likely turn into a "show off" thread versus a practicality thread. Limiting yourself to singular programs will never be as effective as using the tool that does the job best. Even if that means repeating use of a singular tool it will only lead to a false sense of security and understanding by other users you recommend it to. I could recommend and paste my entire program list that I use continually, but in the end...

I say use what you are comfortable with, what makes sense to you, and what accomplishes the job in the aspect that is most important to you(easy, secure, gui, commandline, etc)

I can respect. I guess I kind of took Bash for granted in this heh.

    EDIT:

Want to point out that even though I made this thread sticky, it's not permanent as of yet so if you're annoyed at another sticky don't worry I'll remove that once this is over unless someone wants it to stay.

    Awesome HT!

I should get in on this too:

    For Unix Linux and BSD:

    Nmap

    IP Sorcery

    Hping

    IPTables

    SUSE2Firewall

    Networking:

    Iptraf

    Ethereal and Tethereal

    tcpdump

    SSH

    Apache

    PureFTPd

    Mutt

    Gaim

    Irssi

    Firefox

    Misc:

    XMMS

    Xine

    YAST

    K3b

    Grip

    Perl

    Bash

    pkgtool

    pkg_*

    Windows:

    cmd.exe

    edit

    aim

    EZ-Trust

    net send

    netstat

    PuTTy

    Ad-Aware

Spyware tools of all sort really should be here. windows is the platform they attack as of now.

For firewalls, I know i should put something but I really don't know what. I don't like Windows Firewalls. I have a router and 4 Linux boxes for this.

    Regedit

    msconfig

    defrag

    chkdsk

    Annoucement:

JupiterMedia has decided to very nicely, donate a few prizes for this. So when this is all over I'm going to pick two people who I feel added a lot to this, and they will get some freebies from the AO store. So come on and vote and add your picks!
