    undeniable facts! PART 2

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.

    A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.

A roach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death.

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.

Some lions mate over 50 times a day.

    Butterflies taste with their feet.

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people.

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.

    Starfish have no brains.
(I know some people like that too.)

    Polar bears are left-handed.

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.

Memory of a glodfish only last 3 seconds.

A 1,200-pound horse eats about seven times it's own weight each year.
A 7-year study, which concluded in the summer of 2000, found that 33 U.S. deaths were caused by rottweilers, pit bulls were responsible for 27 deaths.

A bird requires more food in proportion to its size than a baby or a cat.

A capon is a castrated rooster.

A cat sees about six times better than a human at night because of the tapetum lucidum , a layer of extra reflecting cells which absorb light.

A cat uses its whiskers to determine if a space is too small to squeeze through. The whiskers act as feelers or antennae, helping the animal to judge the precise width of any passage.

A cat will clean itself with paw and tongue after a dangerous experience or when it has fought with another cat. This is believed to be an attempt by the animal to soothe its nerves by doing something natural and instinctive.

A cat's arching back is part of a complex body language system, usually associated with feeling threatened. The arch is able to get so high because the cat's spine contains nearly 60 vertebrae which fit loosely together. Humans have only 34 vertebrae.

A cat's jaws cannot move sideways.

A cat's tongue consists of small "hooks," which come in handy when tearing up food.

A chameleon's tongue is twice the length of its body.

A chimpanzee can learn to recognize itself in a mirror, but monkeys can't.

A Cornish game hen is really a young chicken, usually 5 to 6 weeks of age, that weighs no more than 2 pounds.

A cow gives nearly 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.

A father Emperor penguin withstands the Antarctic cold for 60 days or more to protect his eggs, which he keeps on his feet, covered with a feathered flap. During this entire time he doesn't eat a thing. Most father penguins lose about 25 pounds while they wait for their babies to hatch. Afterward, they feed the chicks a special liquid from their throats. When the mother penguins return to care for the young, the fathers go to sea to eat and rest.

A father sea catfish keeps the eggs of his young in his mouth until they are ready to hatch. He will not eat until his young are born, which may take several weeks.

A female mackerel lays about 500,000 eggs at one time.

A Holstein's spots are like a fingerprint or snowflake. No two cows have exactly the same pattern of spots.

A newborn kangaroo is about 1 inch in length.

A polecat is not a cat. It is a nocturnal European weasel.

A quarter of the horses in the US died of a vast virus epidemic in 1872.

A rat can last longer without water than a camel can.

A typical bed usually houses over 6 billion dust mites.

A woodpecker can peck twenty times a second.

A zebra is white with black stripes.

According to ancient Greek literature, when Odysseus arrived home after an absence of 20 years, disguised as a beggar, the only one to recognize him was his aged dog Argos, who wagged his tail at his master, and then died.

Adult cats with no health problems are in deep sleep 15 percent of their lives. They are in light sleep 50 percent of the time.

All clams start out as males; some decide to become females at some point in their lives.

All pet hamsters are descended from a single female wild golden hamster found with a litter of 12 young in Syria in 1930.

An adult lion's roar can be heard up to five miles away, and warns off intruders or reunites scattered members of the pride.

An American Animal Hospital Association poll showed that 33 percent of dog owners admit that they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave messages on an answering machine while away.

An iguana can stay under water for 28 minutes.

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

Ancient Egyptians believed that "Bast" was the mother of all cats on Earth. They also believed that cats were sacred animals.

Animal gestation periods: the shortest is the American opossum, which bears its young 12 to 13 days after conception; the longest is the Asiatic elephant, taking 608 days, or just over 20 months.

Ants are social insects and live in colonies which may have as many as 500,000 individuals.

    Ants don't sleep.

Aphids are born pregnant without the benefit of sex. Aphids can give birth 10 days after being born themselves.

At 188 decibels, the whistle of the blue whale is the loudest sound produced by any animal.

Australian termites have been known to build mounds twenty feet high and at least 100 feet wide.

Barbara Bush's book about her English Springer Spaniel, Millie's book, was on the bestseller list for 29 weeks. Millie was the most popular "First Dog" in history.

Beaver teeth are so sharp that Native Americans once used them as knife blades.

Before the enactment of the 1978 law that made it mandatory for dog owners in New York City to clean up after their pets, approximately 40 million pounds of dog excrement were deposited on the streets every year.

Camels have three eyelids to protect themselves from blowing sand.

Carnivorous animals will not eat another animal that has been hit by a lightning strike.

Cat scratch disease, a benign but sometimes painful disease of short duration, is caused by a bacillus. Despite its name, the disease can be transmitted by many kinds of scratches besides those of cats.

    Catfish have 100,000 taste buds.

Catnip can affect lions and tigers as well as house cats. It excites them because it contains a chemical that resembles an excretion of the dominant female's urine.

Cats are the only domestic animals that walk directly on their claws, not on their paws. This method of walking is called "digitigrade." When cats scratch furniture, it isn't an act of malice. They are actually tearing off the ragged edges of the sheaths of their talons to expose the new sharp ones beneath.Cats have a third eyelid called a haw and you will probably only see it when kitty isn't feeling well.

Cats have amazing hearing ability. A cat's ear has 30 muscles that control the outer ear (by comparison, human ears only have six muscles). These muscles rotate 180 degrees, so the cat can hear in all directions without moving its head.A cat has four rows of whiskers.

Cats have better memories than dogs. Tests conducted by the University of Michigan concluded that while a dogs memory lasts no more than 5 minutes, a cat's can last as long as 16 hours - exceeding even that of monkeys and orangutans.

Cats have more than one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten.

Cats purr at about 26 cycles per second, the same frequency as an idling diesel engine.

Cats step with both left legs, then both right legs when they walk or run. The only other animals to do this are the giraffe and the camel.

Cat's urine glows under a black light.

Cats, not dogs, are the most common pets in America. There are approximately 66 million cats to 58 million dogs, with Parakeets a distant third at 14 million.

A chimpanzee can learn to recognize itself in a mirror, but monkeys can't.
Orangutans are also self aware and recognise a reflection in water to be themselves not another ape. I'm not sure if all great apes are self aware.

Cats step with both left legs, then both right legs when they walk or run. The only other animals to do this are the giraffe and the camel.
I really don't think that is true but I shall put it to the test tonight with my two moggies.

Here we go again (with some repeats no less). Just like in the last list, don't believe stuff that is emailed to you

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.
Chimpanzes and most apes do too.

Memory of a glodfish only last 3 seconds.
Mythbusters busted this myth. They found that goldfish have a long term memory, can memorize patterens, and "know" the person that feeds them.

A zebra is white with black stripes.
Apparently, most Africans think zebras are black with white stripes. Zebra skin color is mostly black, but what we see are rows of white and black hair. This question is something similar to "which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

    Camel milk does not curdle.
Not exactly true. FAO has released a publication on how to curdle camels milk so they can make cheese out of it.

Catnip can affect lions and tigers as well as house cats. It excites them because it contains a chemical that resembles an excretion of the dominant female's urine.
There have been many studies in to why catnip affects cats (and doesn't affect others). This is only one of the many theories out there, and none of them have proven a definitive answer.

dogs memory lasts no more than 5 minutes
I don't buy that for one second. I used to be on NCSARDA and was a dog handler. My dog knew over 50 vocal commands, and 15 silent commands. She knew, and figured out, patterens and remembered them long term. I don't have definative proof on this one, but I don't put any faith in to it.

I'm sure there are plenty of other ones on this list that I could pick apart, but I have real work that needs to be accomplished.

The truth about cats and dogs:
dogs memory lasts no more than 5 minutes
positively untrue. One need only buy a dog and train it to know this. I DO, however, believe that cats possess good memories as well - my cats are both quite well trained (they can scratch their scratching post and house, but no the couch, no climing the draperies or upon the table...) In addition I believe that even domestic housecats are quite territorial. My own dsh (the alpha female of our little animal pride) growls at the postman, as well as the local school bus when it passes by each day on its rounds. She also has a severe dislike for our next door neighbor and is free to express it with a growl and hiss whenever she hears his voice.

I also disagree with the number of sounds a dog is capable of making. Our chihuahua would talk were she able, and articulates using many different vocalizations, including a very good imitation of the 'chirp' that a cat emits when entering or leaving our presence, or recognizing our attentions. Her articulations range from low in frequency to extremely high, varying across at least 4 octaves, as well as from near silent to shrill. At our home it's not just bark, howl, and growl, but many different combinations therein all meaning different things.

Other cool factoids I know firsthand.

A chihuahua will instinctively 'burrow' to sleep, and will try to stash food about a household in other burrows. This is due to their size - they feel safe and protected in a completely enclosed environment, so they burrow under and into things to sleep. You can't leave the laundry lying on the couch for very long without a chihuahua trying to inhabit it. Food is stashed for the same reason - since they're so tiny, odds are if they find a sizeable amount of food in the wild they weren't the critter to kill it, so they 'steal and hide' thereby 'saving' their food for later. Domestic chihuahuas repeat this action at home when the food dish is kept full. Amazingly enough, they also won't eat where the source of the food is - instead they get a bite, carry it a safe distance away and eat it, then go get another and repeat. Same reasoning as stashing on that one.

Cool cat facts I know firsthand.

Female cats, even after being spayed, will lactate and will nurse other kittens. They will also attempt to nurse puppies, and will bathe them as their own. (It's a social thing, really. In a 'wild situation' this 'foster parenting' was proven years ago in prides of cats.)

Even when beaten in a fight, a tomcat will continue to attempt to be the alpha and will return to a fight when his wounds heal. A 'newly conquering' tom will attempt to kill any kittens in a pride, they being the kittens of his adversary, and will strive to impregnate as many of the females in his pride as he can as quickly as he can. Female cats will attempt to hide and protect kittens from a tom who isn't their father, even if they're not their own kittens.

Female cats exist in three physiological conditions - pregnant, nursing babies, or in heat. This cycle continually repeats itself. When a female cat is spayed, the cycle stops with the cat's body acting as if it were pregnant - this is why spayed pets gain weight. Neutered cats (and dogs) get stuck in the 'she's in heat' cycle, which is why a neutered cat (or dog) will still attempt to copulate - even with one's leg. (This also disproves your 'sex for pleasure' factoid btw)

    and finally, really sick stuff:

Male dogs and cats have wet dreams.
Female cats will nurse on male cats, but not on their teats. Dogs do this as well.

    Nuff said.
Even a broken watch is correct twice a day.
