    **Urgent** DVD combo help

    Greeting's

Forgive me if I have provided insufficient information but I have absolutely *NO* knowledge about hardware. This problem is extremely important as I have to submit a report by tomorrow afternoon.

I got a DVD by mail with some data on it. When i insert it into my drive the drive light flashes and then there is write activity on the hard-disk this goes on for hours and hours without any result. If I try to open my computer is doesn't or even If I try to open the DVD drive through run or cmd it doesn't. I disabled norton but it doesn't seem to help. I took the DVD to my friends place some time back and it worked flawlessly.

There are no stores open so I can buy blank cd's and get them burned at my friends house (its 12 here). I have no idea what to do all normal CD's and CD-RW work properly. I have a dell PC and I had same problem in the past where the guy made me delete some data in 2 reg keys but I don't remember. I donut have a 24*7 help contract so I cant call them till 9 tomorrow. I really need help guys.

I have Nero so I ran its info tool and here is some info :

I really don't have any idea why it would do that. If it's the exact same DVD you took to your friends computer and it worked fine then its obviously not the DVD unless you have scratched it or something since then. And Nero says you have DVD-read capabilities, but not Dual layer. Are you sure the DVD isn't dual layer?

Do other DVD's work in the drive?

And you say you have tried just typing "H://" in the run line?

Does My computer pop up fine when the DVD isn't in there?

Maybe try opening Windows explorer by right clicking Start and going to Explore.

    I don't know. Weird.

Some DVD Drives just dont like certain Discs. There may be nothing physically wrong with the disc and it could work in anyother drive you try but your drive will just not read it. Its quite a common thing!

The usual is to see if you can copy it then burn it to another disc - but it looks like you only have a CD re-writer and a DVD-ROM.

Have you tried the obvious like cleaning the laser etc?

    Greeting's

Thank you for your reaply anyway...

I did some google and found this page..

    http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/aspi.htm

Although it has everything about ASPI drivers it did not solve my problem... can anyone plz help me. I updated my drivers and did almost everything mentioned on that site. I even edited the reg key where Start key had value 2

Any idea's or do I have to reinstall windows ??? (plz dont let it be a re-install)

If it plays other DVD;s fine, it is absolutley nothing to do with your configuration, I would bet all on it just being an incompatible disc!

As a last resort you may try updating your firmware on your drive - but dont hold out too much hope!

Like I said before I had the exact same problem with almost all types of DVD's and the tech support guy made me delete to reg keys ( I think they were some upper limit and lower limit) and it worked for few days then I had to re-install windows and it worked fine.

Anyway I have installed the version 4.71 and rebooted my computer atleast 3 times but the same problem. The file with the utility says that ASPI drives work properly but a indipendent utility check from adaptech says its not properl installed ::

I think the problem is the version of files. If you see the log right above this post you'll notice some are 4.6 and some 4.7. Should I delete all the files listed above and reinstall the drivers ?

Hey, sorry didnt realise you are having problems with ALL dvds!

Yes, looking at your config about there is a few "old" drivers there. If you have a windows CD - try deleting them all from the device manager, then restart your PC - windows should install the default ones for you. Try them out - if they dont work try and get an updated version!

Nokia thanks man. i have already deleted some of the file except one which is locked by some process but I have set the delete flag for reboot... Hope it works out or no gift for my love and maybe a new job hunt (crap I only have 2 months holiday left before college starts again).

Anyway just for the information I called up one more guy who is working on this same report and he said only 4 (incl. me) are working on it (out of 26) and the one with the best report gets huge cash bonus and maybe a promotion.

anyway may be i'm out. CRAP
