I've always been amazed at the Apollo spacecraft guidance system, built by the MIT Instrumentation Lab. In 1969, this software got Apollo 11 to the moon, detached the lunar module, landed it on the moon's surface, and brought three astronauts home. It had to function on the tiny amount of memory available in the onboard Raytheon computer--it carried 8 Kbytes, not enough for a printer driver these days. And there wouldn't be time to reboot in case of system failure when the craft made re-entry. It's just as well Windows wasn't available for the job.
They must be using Windows to store the footage, though

Interesting read, btw

Hey Hey,

I love that it's called the great software ever written... I don't consider an Operating System to be software.. it's a compilation of software (maybe)... and then at that point... How do you describe software.. Is a library software or a single executable software or does it have to be a package (Say Photoshop.. or is each file in photoshop software)... Where do you "technically" draw the line...

I also don't see how anyone could put Java up there... If it was a list of worth designed software... maybe.. and then... is Java itself software... It's a language... JRE is software, JDK is software... but Java itself isn't...

While an interesting read I find the list questionable at best.

Peace,
HT

i think Outlook Express is the greatest software ever written

at least when you consider

1) a gazillion people used it
2) a bizillion people were exploited and learned about security (ok maybe 6 people actually did)
3) a shizillion security companies made money on solutions to help prevent 2
4) Microsoft figured out security DOES matter (mostly)

edit:
4) Microsoft figured out security DOES matter (sorta)

edit: edit:
4) Microsoft figured out security DOES matter (kinda)

Progress ALWAYS creates complexity

Lord’s Prayer in Matthew (Chapter 6:9) NIV = 52 words

United States Declatration of Independence = < 2000 words

European Community regulations for the transportation of Duck Eggs across national borders = > 30 000 words

and I have probably cocked up the < and > too
so now I'm in my SIXTIES FFS
WTAF, how did that happen, so no more alterations to the sig, it will remain as is now
