    AntiViews - HTRegz

"Peace, HT" - you either love it, or your name is not HTRegz and it drives you up the walls. Add to that an interesting way of expressing his secret love for the good ol' US of A , a never-ending barrel of knowledge and opinions, and many a bus-trip to many a job interview, and you've got another AO moderator. The bus always seems to break down - or something else goes wrong - but HT never does. Relentlessly going were some of us have been before, but most of us will never go: HTRegz!

    HTRegz's Antionline profile

Name: Tyler Reguly (Add an H to the front of the bold for Heavy and a z to the end for coolness and you've got my nick)

Place and date of Birth (or age): 24

Current place of residence: Toronto, ON

Marital status: The cost of a ring away from engagement.

AO: How did you get into computers?

HT: When I was visiting my cousin, I used to play with his computer... My parents never really saw the need to buy a computer... Then in about 94 my aunt's coworker gave us his old Tandy 1000. It had Jill of the Jungle, an old version of WP, GWBasic and DB software. I loved it... 2 years later my parents decided to buy me a real computer and I got a Pentium just as they were coming onto the market.. I got to do the research and spec'd it out... 75Mhz, 8MB RAM, 1MB Video Card and a 1GB HDD... (it was a huge jump up from the 10MB in the Tandy). After that computers became my love and my life...

AO: What is your area of specialty?

HT: Hard to say... I spent 6 years playing with Cisco routers through high school and college and I enjoy fiddling with operating systems... but I would say the lower level networking stuff... protocol level and to some extent wirelevel... Also security, since I work in the industry... Then again I did a number of years of end user support... Not my favourite thing... but I've got the experience.

AO: What do you do for a living?

HT: I work for a company in the Vulnerability and Risk assessment industry. My actual job title has varied between Vulnerability and Exposure Research Engineer and Reverse Engineer... Think of it as being between Virus Signature Authors and the guys at metasploit, immunity sec and core sec. While the guys at those companies are writing exploits for those vulnerabilites we're writing non-invasive ways of telling if you're vulnerable or not... Any day of the week could include VMWare, IDA, netcat, python and custom scripts or a whole lot of looking at Ethereal.

AO: How did you get into your career?

HT: About 6 months ago (those of you reading this check the date and figure out 6 months before it.... Feb 2006). I applied to a job posting on the company website on a whim... I was living 2 hours away and working as an SA. I travelled here for two interviews and thought they were joking when they offered me the job... I almost didn't take it.. but I realized I'd be passing up the opportunity of a lifetime and I haven't regretted it once.

AO: Describe your education and/or training?

HT: I spent three years attending college... Computer Systems Technology was the title of the program... The profs were awesome, some really bright guys... After graduation I thanked one of the profs and he commented that they hadn't really done a lot for me while I was there... The truth is it changed me a lot... It wasn't necessarily the technical skills... but it gave me three years of access to equipment I wouldn't normally have access to... 2 years of job experience... and was well worth it.

AO: Do you plan on staying where you are (career-wise) or are you still in school / working on certs to get into another area?

HT: I'll stay where I am... for as long as I possibly can... I could write my CCNA/CCNP and any of the CompTia certs but I don't feel a need to... I will at some point write my CISSP just because of the industry I'm in but that's about it.. I also study on my own on the side...

AO: What one piece of advice would you offer to others who may be interested in following a career path or educational path similar to yours?

    HT: Three things....

    1. Ensure that your place of education offers a co-op program... it makes all the difference in the world.

    2. Go out of your way... One of the key reasons I'm where I am right now is because of my first interview... I was taking the greyhound (bus) which broke down about 75 minutes away. Myself and 3 others split 100 bucks each on a cab so that we could each get to where we had to go... That went a long way to impressing my current employers... I could have called and said I'd be late... but I made the effort to make it there..

    3. Do whatever you can... I had the opportunity to build a website and create the method used on the back-end... I was hired to do it... was almost sued in the process and lost 2/3s of the contract price... but the resulting mention of the website and method during an interview helped me more than the money ever would have.

AO: What skill do you think is invaluable in your area of specialty?

HT: The Ability to work on a team... Geeks are known to be anti-social... to be introverts... I'm quite the opposite, always have been... but it's the team work and ability to play well with others that helps you succeed... That's an important thing to remember when picking the place where you go to school... Ensure the soft skill... (The common sense, NOT) portion of the program matches the technical portion... mine did... it was crucial for many of the people I went to school with... and it's key to landing and keeping a job.

AO: Describe one of your best / most effective security practices.

HT: Segmented Network at home.. Wifi has its own network (and leads into a captive portal)... VoIP has it's own network, There's one switched network for my GF and visitors and then there's the primary network that I'm on... I also have a soekris setup at the front of the network running m0n0wall... gives me tons of flexibility over a standard home router but costs a fraction say a cisco setup.

AO: Do you have a little-known fact about yourself (personal, hobbies, tech-related) that you would be willing to share?

HT: I love playing guitar... although I don't get to that often anymore... I have a movie fetish.... I see basically every new release every week... and a domain name fetish... I buy as many as I can as often as I can... Lastly I don't actually hate Americans nearly as much as I claim I do... but man is it fun to see people's reactions by playing the enemy.

AO: How did you find (out about) Antionline?

HT: I don't even remember... I stumbled across it and lurked for years.... Then one day I decided I should actually sign up and see what was so special about it.

    Peace,
    HT

AO: Peace to you, too, HT! And may we suggest www.peace.ht for your next domain name conquest - the going rate in Haiti seems to be a mere $300...

    Peace, HT!

Nice to know that the specialists are real practitioners.

Now... if Negative and MissM and the other seniors get Antiviews, too, then the community will be warmer still. Right?
