These kinds of things are inevitable, especially in closed/sheltered societies like this one. I think he may be schizophrenic. I'm also alittle confused about how some of the girls are being treated in a hospital. Doesn't that defeat the point of being Amish?

The man wasn't from the amish community, he was from "normal" socity. He invaded the school looking for girls to molest. It could have been almost any other school in the area.

Question: Do the Amish go for health care services? How do they deal with technological advances of health care? Do the Amish allow the Doctors to go all out when they are ill or do they place restrictions on medical care provided? Do they believe in immunizations?

Answer: The Amish use local doctors, dentists, eye doctors, etc., and will go to specialists and hospitals as needed. They make use of advances in health care that are used in hospitals, etc. They generally try home remedies for ailments first before going to a doctor or the hospital. They also are inclined to go to Mexico for major treatments because of the cost of medications. [Editor's note: The Amish do not participate in medical or insurance plans and instead pay for all medical costs themselves.] The children do get immunizations (although not all may do so just as not all Englishers may do so either)

This guy snapped for reason's only he probably knows, from some of the news reports last night, this guy led a remarkably normal life, no criminal record, no problems with debts, considered okay by most neighbours, has three kids of his own.......it happens...

What I am amazed at is the way the Amish community have allready forgiven this person, and are ready to deal with their dead and move on, no mass lawyers being rounded up to go after society because they (society) allowed this to happen to them.

No accusations being thrown out about the Law letting them down, no exodus to the late night TV shows or guest spots on Letterman and Leno or an interview with that twit O'Reilly.

They will grieve amongst themselves, and go forward, these are a hardy people, and a close knit community, it's tragic that the outside world intruded on them and dealt them a massive blow, just imagine if this episode had of taken place in a community like oh I don't know...Beverly Hills...can see it now....mass riots, lynchings, looting all manner of things...

They were treated at modern hospitals. Penn State Children's Hospital, Christiana Hospital, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and possibly more. It's just very difficult to survive a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

This tragedy happened less than an hours drive from me. It's really a shame that it happened to their community. They hate the media attention and try their hardest to stay out of the limelight. They'll take care of this in their own community and try to get the national/international attention to die down immediately.

I actually go up that way quite often as they have very nice arts and crafts and they have excelent markets and food. They are not very socialable and only answer questions about a product or service you want to buy. They are a very private community and are able to bypass some of our laws (such as child labor laws and not paying some taxes) due to their way of life. They also ask the media to stop giving updates on the girls conditions.

This had affected me in more ways then one.

Yeah, I'm late, so what...I actually admire the way the Amish handled this, as a whole, I mean. I grew up in Reading, PA...it's right outside of Amish Country. I've always appreciated the way they handle difficulties and conflicts...it's almost Buddhist. Freaked me out the way they wanted to use portions of the money donated to the family of the victims toward the family of the man who perpetrated the crime...I, personally, would've went puritanical eye for an eye kinda thing.

We used to make fun of them...normal kid thing to do...older I get, the better they seem to have it, to me....meh...they certainly stay consistent within themselves in their beliefs. Anyway, you don't ever hear of Amish people taking all your money and marrying you off to someone, or taking your money and making you move into a compound, or...well, taking your money...just seems like they always give.

I grew up around some Amish in the midwest. People liked to make fun of them. I admired them. They were kind of used for their craftmanship to build things. I say kind of used because they were taken advantage of in my opinion. In other countries like everywhere, they would be driven into submission and compliance. Here, I dreamed of taking a flamethrower to those who mocked them.
