Booting Linux from a new computer

Hey guys, I have built a new computer within the last week or two, and it is running great in windows.
Here are the specs:
Core 2 E6300 1.86Ghz
ASUS P5LD2 MoBo
1G ram
ATI Radeon X1300
Samsung DVD burner
But when I try to boot in linux using a CD like Auditor It gives me some sort of 'Filesystem KANOTIX not found' error, a Kernel Panic, and sends me to a minimal command prompt.
I have tried booting with backtrack and helix, and they both give me errors too.
Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like, after the kernel boots, it can't find the cdrom drive.
Yes, it's possible to boot from that drive, and then have no driver
for it. I don't know the solution, other than try another distro.

well, i have an old CD drive lying around, so ig ill try sticking that in my computer and booting with that..if i still have those ribbon cables.....

Sounds like your DVD drive is a SATA? If it is, maybe that has something to do with it... Maybe a more recent version of the CDs. Or try a more mainstream distro like ubuntu, just to make sure

no, my CD drive isn't SATA...also,i put in the old drive and that didn't work either...it said 'looking for KANOTIX in /hdb' then it said that it was mounting it and gave me the KANOTIX filesystem not found. Am I going to have to install it to a USB drive on another computer? or can i like use a floppy that has drivers on it, then redirects to the CD?

[edit] I tried ubuntu, and after about 10 minutes it still had not passed the loading screen, and the bar stopped moving. Could I try something like VMware? Ive never used it before, but i know i has something to do with an OS in an OS.

It'd be nice to have the exact error message, because it's likely that a google search will bring up a result. My apologies if you've already tried it, but google tends to be a fantastic place to find error information, especially when you know the exact error and put it in quotes.

KANOTIX is a free download - you'll find a list of mirrors by clicking on "download" on the KANOTIX.com web site. The web site also gives links for ordering a DVD (remaster edition) for Europe (one for the the USA is planned). The DVD versions are only for sale and not for download, and Joerg does not actually produce them (though he consults with those who do).

One of the first things I noticed when booting KANOTIX is that it runs GRUB as the boot loader (but LILO is also included). This brought joy to my heart, as I've been a GRUB fan for several years now. Just as in Knoppix, you initially boot up to a screen where you can choose some options. You can also type in additional options, which I initially neglected to do. That mistake bit me when I tried to install KANOTIX on my laptop - I wound up with a text-mode screen which looked like this:

That didn't look good. As it turned out, the problem was that my laptop has an external USB DVD drive and KANOTIX wasn't seeing it. I found the solution by pressing F1 to bring up the help menu. From there, the Bootoptions submenu revealed the trick:

bootusb2 -- loads usb 1.1 + 2.0

So I rebooted, and this time typed the bootusb2 "cheatcode" (as it is called) on the options line. To my joy, the GUI began loading and within a couple of minutes I found myself staring at a pretty KDE desktop emblazoned with the word KANOTIX. Success! Had I preferred the lightweight and speedy IceWM rather than KDE, I could have also added the cheatcode "desktop=icewm".

That didn't do anything that had to do with my problem, that was for booting from an external HD. I checked that menu anyway, but it contained nothing that had to do with CD drivers.

have you tried re-burning the .iso at a lower speed? maybe try re-burning at the lowest speed possible and make sure verify data is enabled.

just a simple idea that usually works for me.
