When I read stuff like that, I dunno whether I should laugh or get upset !?

Lebanon is NOT an islamic country, nonetheless Beirut !!!
We have about 65% muslim and 35% Christian. (unofficial of course)
This country is based on religious diversity and we lived a long civil war that made us appreciate what we have.

Anyhow even in 1965 I don't understand what made you think back then that it was islamic: christians have been in Lebanon since forever, the parliament is 50-50 christian-muslim and the president has always been christian (except now cause we don't have one), and there aren't ANY rules based on a religion imposed on others.

On the other hand, let's get back to the subject, my ISP has no political influences, he's just an ******* and I don't like him seeing what i browse !

And by the way I study in the AMERICAN University of Beirut, and there (cause it's a university) they also monitor all my traffiic and I don't like that either, I mean I do have a right for privacy.

But still, it's a matter of ports, how to make TOR connect to other ports while I am connecting to TOR using the HTTP(80) allowed protocol.

Right to privacy? Yeah right. We no longer have it in the US as an American citizen. They are going to give the FBI the right to filter at all backbone hubs for any signs of criminal activity. Customs has the right to inspect the content of all hard drives when they come in to the US. If a citizen of a state is illegally arrested and they subsequently find evidence of other illegal behavior the Supreme Court says that evidence can be used against you... Right to Privacy is now apparently limited to only meaning a right to an abortion nothing else.

    lol, privacy?

It is a well known fact that governments have run Tor servers. The greatest illusions in the West are the illusions of Privacy, Democracy, and Security.

Freenet is about as anonymous as you are going to get, and unfortunately with security you lose speed.

And yes, there is kiddy porn around as well...good luck!

    btw, hello inso-mniac :-)

I know someone online in Lebanon and would of chosen to go there, but I chose Egypt largely because it is much cheaper to visit. Unfortunately you are going to have to get used to people with their stereotypes. Someone may know how to write a protocol, but if Fox/CNN are the only news programs then it is best not to get into politics

For everyone else: Lebanon is considered the "Switzerland of the Middle East", and has always acted as a wonderful ally and a center for liberal ideas and free thinking in the Middle East.

Did curiousity really kill the cat, or is that just what they want you to think?

That I can understand. Government, corporations and education generally do. Mostly it is a security and resources issue, although in the case of government and corporations it is also because you are not doing what you are being paid for.

I don't quite understand why your home provider is a problem though..........after all, you are paying for the service? If, as you say, there is no censorship or politics involved then it must be economic/resource influenced?

Can you check with people using other providers to see if they have the same issues? Do you have a premium service or is it a cheap one?

Also, have you tried other proxies, and do they work?

Incidentally, you do this at your own risk. I didn't see anything untoward but you never really know?

knoledgesponge, your reply made my day, cause it's been a long time since western people portray lebanon to be muslim, extremist and violent. I'm sorry that Beirut is a bit expensive at the moment, the economy isn't at its best shape, but it's still WAY cheaper than places like cyprus or europe. And i assure you it's nicer than egypt, more natural, cause if you're gonna go to Sharam el Sheikh u'll notice it's foreigns who are all over the place, not genuine anymore, but in Beirut it's a wonderful mix of cultures in the lebanese people who are Arab-French-American-influenced

Let me tell you exactly what's up with my ISP, the cheap bastards have a connection that if divided should provide 50K for its users but instead they're giving away 128 "unshared" connection, and you do get it. But the trick is, stuff gets blocked, P2P doesn't run and (as i found out by myself recently) they look at what websites are getting most traffic and from whom, so they are invading our privacy in order to minimize traffic : their resources.

But DSL is all legal and (almost) no stuff like that happens, now i'm waiting for my 512K line to get set-up hopefully this week, i've been waiting too long :@ !!

I wouldn't count on that. Unfortunately it is far more common than you seem to think:

    http://www.badphorm.co.uk/page.php?2

That is the UK, but Phorm and others also operate in the USA and other countries.

they look at what websites are getting most traffic and from whom, so they are invading our privacy in order to minimize traffic : their resources.
Not quite, I would say that they monitor the traffic for marketing data which they sell. Sort of like Alexa and others. The "truncated service" is to ensure that they can deliver the performance to the maximum # of users with the minimum of kit.

I think you might be getting confused with your links? 128Kbps is an ISDN link whereas 50Kbps is an analogue dial-up connection............ if you are lucky

they're giving away 128 "unshared" connection, and you do get it.
If that means that it is free or low cost (for ISDN) then that would explain a lot................ they have to make their money somehow?

Over here you can get "free" ISDN and dial-up connections. You have to pay for the telephone connection and the ISP gets a proportion of that from the Telco. I believe you can even set up an anonymous connection so long as you don't want e-mail and webspace.

Good luck with your ADSL......... you should be OK at 512Kbps. Mine is supposed to be 8Mbps but I only get around 5

Weird thing is that I have two ADSL modems (Conexant and BT Voyager). Using the same computers and the same line at just about the same time the Conexant is about 500Kbps faster.

I'm ok with watching traffic for caching purposes, cause it doesn't store the identity of the users making the requests, so they can store the content of websites on their servers in order to make connections only to their servers and not to the internet.

On the other hand, my 128K isn't ISDN, my providor has his own private network set-up : he passes network cables from building to another, and puts switches on the rooftops, funny **** ! But these kind of providers are vanishing ever since DSL.

Plus my 512 is supposed to double to 1 Mb at night, but the throughput isn't really that much, cause everyone has started to use it too.

................. well what is it then?

You cannot get more than 56.6K out of a standard copper wire connection..... it is physically impossible...............and given the redundancies, you would be lucky to get 50K?

inso-mniac, correct m if im wrong, but the person you're refferring to as being ur ISP is actualy your network administrator:

Internet-->Actual ISP (may not even be lebanese and isnt blocking or filtering any ports or traffic)-->idiot person you're reffering to (probaly also has an internet caffe and gets his internet thru a download dish installed illegally or some similar retarded setup and is blocking P2P and other protocols) -->bunch of switches/routers and CAT5 cables speard around nearby buildings rooftops --> YOU (residing in lebanon wondering why your IP says you're in Russia or something like that :P)

It's also a similar situation in AUB (expect their connection is legal, from IDM, a lebanese ISP)

so basically your problem is with your local network admin
..maybe this would clarify it for the others to be able to help you.

P.S. : peronally I think your best bet (tho its non-tech)is to talk to that admin and ask him if he'd unblock P2P or watever you need if you pay him a little extra, or just wait for DSL to be installed at your house
