I think MS are planning that if you buy XP or Vista you can upgrade to win7 for free... I cannot remember witch one it is, but i'm pretty sure i remember reading/hearing about it not that long back..?

I never heard that. All that I knew is that people who bought the OEM version of the OS some time ago (probably an year), they will upgrade your OS to Win 7 for free

It's not Microsoft that's doing this. It's the different companies who are selling Vista. Newegg for one. I'm not sure how much Microsoft is/isn't saying to them about it though.
Either way, Microsoft is getting the money, so I doubt they're complaining too much. Plus it helps the distributors get rid of their extra stock. But I'm not sure if it includes XP, since technically XP is at the end of life.
