tri booting, which platform

currently my old dell server is on it's last legs, running for last 5 years 24/7
it is currently duel booting xp and linux (need xp for itunes for itouch but that is another questions)

i am thinking of getting a new computer and having it tri booting (xp, linux, osx) but do i
get a pc and buy osx and try and install all three (have read around how you can install osx onto pc hardware)

or buy a mac, install xp, and linux.....

(i have tried running vm images of xp in linux but struggle to get itunes to install....)

any thoughts welcome

I'm not an expert on this, however I would say that to be "Legal" you will need to purchase a Mac and either triple boot (bootcamp) or use VM's to run XP and Linux. I would think that the iTunes and iTouch will work in OS X, as they're parts of an Apple product. Also you may have to consider getting Windows 7 unless you can find a copy of XP (or get your current one actvated on the new PC).

Have you considered:

1. Turn it off
2. Clean it out
3. Increase RAM
4. Replace fans
5. Replace CPU heatsink and thermal compound (use silver)

I am curious as to why you would want OS-X on a "server"?

Is this just your "main PC"?

I am looking at your best ROCE/ROCI or "bang per buck" here.

I do clean and lube up the fan regularly although always fairly clean.
It is kind ok a main pc as in it is a server which I use. I use webmin to manage it and it lives under the stairs so I rarely have physical contact. It has as much ram as dell will allow me to cram on the mb.
And I would do everything ligit
I have xp and Linux so prob buy mac???

To stay legit you would have to buy an Apple computer. I am wondering if this is such a good idea for a server.....what advantage do you see in doing this given that you already have Linux and Windows.

As far as I know the Mac server software is called "Snow Leopard", is 64bit and costs around $500

As it is Unix based, I wonder what it would give you that you don't already have?

I don't see anything technically wrong with what you are suggesting, but I can't say I know of anyone running an Apple server for a PC network. In this part of the World I think it is the cost and lack of support that influences things.

Sure, there are people with Apple laptop clients on their networks, but not servers.

Mind you, I don't have any dealings with publishing, advertising, design or other specialist sectors, so it isn't really that surprising that I haven't come across one.

well i think it was the fact i had rose tinted glasses when i entered the apple store!!!

the system i have works so prob best not to mess it all up

i do not need any 'special' server software
i use abyss which covers all my needs easily and this works on mac's too
and ssh plus webmin to manage it

it is only a very simple website!
