    SMS proxy??

So a friend and I were talking, smoking, drinking, smokin talking, drinking talking etc last night and we brought this subject up:

SMS proxys, where A can text message someone, the text is recieved by person B but person B doesn't see the real number buy a 'proxy' number. Person B responds to proxy number and person A recieves text on at his/her real number.
Is this a new idea? Has it been done already? Does this technology already exist? is it legal? we had many questions about it but because of the smoking, drinking cycle weren't in the condition to research it.

EDIT: Ya know, looking back on this through clearer eyes I guess it would just be a virtual number that supported SMS.... nevermind,

SMS Proxy service allows you to send SMS from your customers on the network, you can not currently range. This allows you to charge more SMS successfully delivered to your subscribers than in the past. SMS SMS Proxy Sevice not pick up the wireless network and SMSC routes the band SMSRelay, the message delivery service for the termination of the destination networks. Posts Having decided to address the existing network of global SMS Interworking Agreements Networks, which covers more than 300 networks, but also from some of the other GSM and pager networks

This involves the setup and installation of SS7 signalling hardware on site and international links to interconnect either private links or the public internet. Encryption of the link is a possible option.

    Hi there IcSilk,

I can only speak for over here in the UK, but it exists and is legal. I have friends who occasionally send international messages and it is cheaper to use a forwarding agent or relay than have their personal cellphone set up for it.

Yes it is legal.............you have no right to know where the message actually came from, just like a voice call on a cell or landline?.............the caller can turn the feature off if they chose.

A case of "illegal is as illegal does" rather than per se

Hey! our pet bot almost got it spot on this time!!!!

    SMS proxy

Is it possible that the Cingular internet-only plan does not allow SMS? The SMS function should work for a voice/data plan.

When calling the API /validate/smspin the user is authenticated by the username and OTP PIN. The sending of an SMS with a OTP value is triggered. This OTP value is valid for a configurable amount of time. A sample webpage can be used at

Another possibility of triggering SMS is when the user authenticates with username and PIN. When username and PIN are passed to the authentication URL like /validate/check or /validate/simplecheck, the user is rejected, but, if the PIN is correct, the sending of an SMS is triggered.
