    Win8 Final Beta Out

Microsoft have just released the final beta of the Windows 8 operating system. It is called the "Release Preview" and is build 8400.

Doesn't seem much different from the consumer preview that preceeded it.

The goldfish has gone and you have tulips instead.

For those with AMD FX series processors the expected performance improvements don't seem to have materialised at least not on my 4100

    PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

It seems that this won't dual boot unless you run it on a virtual machine

It will put your existing OS and applications into separate folders, and you will have to re-install them. I believe that you will have to do that from a CD/DVD for the OS?

If, like myself, you have a small SSD as your primary drive you may want to get rid of the previous Windows folder (c. 15GB). Well it won't let you, even with administrator privileges ........ it wants "System".

So, you need to go into the drive properties menu and select the drive clean-up options. One of them is to delete the old Windows installation. In all I recovered 20+GB, which is important when your drive is only around 57GB (nominal = 60).

My first installation was via the MS upgrade utility onto a Consumer Preview version. I have burnt the 32 and 64 bit ISOs and will be trying them later.

    UPDATE!!!

Well, I tried to use the ISO version of the 32 bit on my test machine................

"Your processor does not support this version of Windows"........WTF?

So I go to the online update on the same machine.............. same message........

Why has my test machine run the Developer Preview and the Consumer Preview without any particular problems?

Would this be another one of those nasty little deals between M$ and Intel?

M$ will be the loser, because my call right now is to ignore Windows 8 and £$$%^&* Intel.

    My personal opinion of course

    EDIT:

I am using an AMD Athlon 3000+ @ 2.17 ghZ
    2.5gb RAM
    GeForce 6200 video 256MB

    So, what's the problem?

I wrote "Build #8400" on a bathroom stall.
Ah! that would be just below where a guy wrote:

"My mother made me a homosexual"

    and another guy wrote:

"If I sent her the wool, would she make me one?"

A bit to the left of:

"And the Lord said to the good shepherd: 'Son, this is cattle country'" ?

    Ummmm, yeah, well..............

Thanks for the feedback chaosclown, I was thinking of digging out an old Intel chip, but I guess the best I have is a 2.26, so yours is more modern.

What I don't understand is why this should suddenly be sprung upon us, given Microsoft's apparent intention to provide a "one size fits all" operating system. Hell, I know that my 12 year old Athlon is old, but I would still back it against Intel Atoms in fondleslabs and the like?

Also, the Developer and Consumer previews worked just fine...........from a personal computing experience viewpoint, they ran as well as XP on 1.8 and 2.01GHz boxes.

This looks like a shot to the foot to me?

    Another Update :)

Hmmmm, apparently it wants some hardware stuff turned on, which you might be able to do in the BIOS?

Otherwise................... you need to dl and burn the iso.

If you explore that disk, just ignore the "setup" in root........ one of the other directories has a setup application in it...............

    That's the one you want................

You are forced to do a clean install BTW.

    EDIT:

That didn't work for my Athlon 3000+ so I guess that leaves a whole raft of people who can only upgrade to Windows 7?

Nihil; I downloaded that first Beta thing you posted about months ago. I haven't used it because, well, I don't really like using Windows other than either Windows 2000 Professional, or Windows 7.

I've had a Computer since September of 1999, and when I got that first POS thing, it came with Windows 95, and was already out dated as ****. The reason is, my Mom, instead of just ordering one for me, or buying one in a store, paid 800 dollars to my Uncle, and bought his old one.

I don't know what kind of Processor it had, or how much RAM, because, well, it was the first one I ever owned period. I didn't know a thing about Computers, and it was the machine I cut my teeth on so to speak.

I only had it for like 6 months. That was the one where it came with Windows 95, and since I didn't get Manuals, and didn't know a thing about Computers in general because I'd never owned one, and, at school, I rarely touched them (I didn't exactly try hard in school at the time) so I knew nothing, and couldn't just read a manual to learn, so instead, each day I'd screw with it a little bit here and there, and then each night, I'd sit down, click on the Start Menu, and go down the list of Programs and open up a Program, and screw with it until I had it at least somewhat figured out.

That's how I learned everything back then. You can imagine that when I finally got to "MS-DOS Prompt" I was more than confused. I did this for a while actually; I'd click on Start, go to Programs, and click on the very first one listed, and screw around until I'd learned how it worked.

Then I'd click on the second one listed and so on. MS-DOS Prompt really screwed me up, because I didn't know what a Command Line was. So for a while, I messed with it, but couldn't understand it. So I skipped it and kept going.

One day, I finished, and I knew how to use the thing, and I realized that when my Uncle sold this to my Mom, he didn't Delete anything on it. The House I lived in was Big, so he'd come and live there sometimes, and then, he'd leave and be gone for a while. One time, while he was away, I noticed he had left everything on this thing, including his Prodigy Internet Account.

I opened it up one day, and it asked for a password. I knew what the Internet was, but I hadn't really ever gone online. Well, After two tries, I guessed his password, and got online. The noise it made was like WTF!

I didn't know anything but online, so, I again started screwing around. I learned that I could use a "Search Engine" and after seeing what the chances were, I waited until night time to start a mini porn marathon.

During the day I'd look for stuff on Computers, and eventually, my Uncle realized what I was doing, sort of. He knew I'd figured out his password, so he told my Mom, and said the Net was dangerous and blah blah blah, and got my Mom to buy "Net Nanny"....

Now, remember, I'd just gotten my first Computer. I didn't know what Hacking was at all, or Computer Security. But I DID know and understand that a Computer would do whatever you told it to do, but also, you COULD do things that it didn't expect you to do.

When I went for another Porn Marathon, the ****ing NetNanny popped up asking for a password because I was "Looking up websites it said I couldn't".... I was a little annoyed, and after about 3 hours, I figured out a way around it.

Now, yes, these days I would have laughed my ass off and uninstalled it, but I didn't know anything like that back then. Instead, I found a way to crash it, and force it to shut off.

I still remember when it started giving them problems. Because even though this Computer was supposed to be mine, my Mom used it and so did one of my Aunts. My Aunt wanted the password to do stuff without NetNanny watching, and I still remember one day I was in my room, and my Mom was helping me with something, and my Aunt yelled up the stairs that she couldn't get the password. My Mom was trying to tell her the password, but my Aunt is dumb as ****.

So anyway, my Uncle tried to help but they couldn't understand why it suddenly locked them out. They couldn't enter a password, and it wouldn't accept the idiotic password "neverget" that they had chosen.

That was because "Some bastard" had found a way to circumvent the password mechanism, and cause it to crash every time someone tried to enter it. This little bastard must be pretty damn smart too because a week earlier he had just gone online for the very first time, and only had a Computer for two weeks, and yet, he understood that things aren't always as they seem, and EVERY Program, has a weakness SOMEWHERE. And he also liked to play Pranks. And he LOVED ****ing with authority.

That little bastard had set up NetNanny in a way that it would no longer accept their "neverget" password (Does it make sense I STILL remember the shitty password they used to try to lock ME of all people out?) And so whenever they tried to enter the password for netnanny to use the Net freely, it would lock up and crash, and they couldn't go online.

What can I say? I LOVE taking someone else's Ammo and using it on them. So anyway, they eventually just uninstalled it. I think the reason I didn't just simply uninstall it was that one, I didn't think about it, and two, if I'd done that, they would know I had done it, and I couldn't just install it again every day, because I didn't know the Password when I made it crash the first time. I don't remember how I got it to crash the first time, but once I could do it on command, I just had a few steps I'd take to do that.

After they uninstalled it it was easier anyway.

I hated Windows 95, and when I bought my first Computer that I personally paid for, which I'm still using as an FTP Server, it had been 6 months since I got that POS one. I accidentally killed it with something I still have on floppy that wasn't in a zip file, and now it is, that I got from a friend.

It remains the only piece of software I've EVER seen that does REAL physical damage to a hard drive. Everyone I've sent it to can't seem to figure it out, but yea, it actually kills it. The POS Computer I was talking about, I wiped the MBR, and the Partition table, and tried installing Linux on it, and eventually, I installed PC-DOS on it, because it said the Hard Drive was too small for Windows 3.11.... Yea, this thing had Windows 95 and a bunch of MP3s on it, and now it said Windows 3.11 was too big.

Anyway, I said all that to explain that I hated those versions of Windows. Then I got Windows ME, and hated it. Windows 2000 I did like, and then XP came out and even though it was "OK" and people here said it was good, I still thought it sucked.

I saw people saying XP was the best thing Microsoft ever did other than NT and 2000, but I still thought it sucked.

Then of course, was Windows Server 2003, which was OK as a desktop, but who would pay that much for a Desktop? And WTF was Microsoft Thinking putting Windows Media Player as installed by default on a ****ing Server OS anyway? A Media player that not only has a bunch of security holes, but, to patch them, requires a ****ing reboot? Really? Dumb.

Then Microsoft released yet another abomination... After a while, they released Windows 7. The Computer I'm using right now came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit edition. I don't have Windows booted up right now, but it IS installed on here. This Computer Dual Boots Linux and Windows 7.

I actually like Windows 7, and I do think it's nice.

Now, Windows 8....First off, who the **** designed that stupid interface? I know Bill Gates is totally into Tablet PCs and thinks they are the ****, but seriously? Even if you CAN turn that **** off, is it REALLY any better than 7?

I've been watching Windows 8 being made, and I REALLY don't see much going on that makes me want it.

I still have it and I haven't used it once, because every time I see what it looks like, I want to puke. So not only does the look suck, but WHERE IS THE INNOVATION? Where are those awesome features and **** that make people want to use it?

I've been watching this thing being made for a while now, and I also keep up with what Microsoft is doing with it and adding to it. As of right now, I still don't know of any one reason I'd use it.

And like I said, I've been watching this thing in the making, and waiting for something that makes me want to use it.

This is just MY opinion, but Windows 8, seems like nothing more than Windows 7, with a Paint Job. And let's be Honest here; They're STILL using ****ing Windows NT! Windows NT stood for "New Technology" And was made partially by a POS **** up from VMS! VMS is ****!

In MY House, we use VMS as a swear word. And no, I'm not kidding. I've literally said "VMS that!" And my Wife knew I was saying piss on something.

NT, 2000, XP, 2003, 2008, 7, 8....ALL of those are based on the first one. I mean everyone knows Windows 2000 was called NT 5.0, and XP was also based on it, as was 2003 and 2008, but why is Windows 7 still based on Windows NT? And Windows 8 seems to be the same thing.

When is Microsoft going to finally write an OS that isn't based on Windows NT? It seems like they have been using it for WAY to long. NT is NOT Unix!

They already have been for some time, the "NT" bit is their marketing drones trying to imply continuity and stability.

Windows 2000 was the last true NT OS. I guess that XP was something of a hybrid perhaps? but there is no way you can convince me that Vista was NT based..........if it was, it would have worked, rather than being an epic fail.

As for Windows 8, it is mostly a revamped version of Windows 7 aimed (I guess?) at providing a common and scalable OS to run on a variety of hardware platforms, touchscreen devices in particular.

All I do is a single click on the button that takes me to the traditional desktop.........no great hardship there.

There obviously are some more significant differences though, as witnessed by my experience with the Athlon 3000+. It seems to be using hardware supported security methods of some sort, which is why the Consumer Preview works and the Release Preview does not. The 12 year old Athlon can't handle it, but the FX4100 has no problems.

In this part of the world there are still quite a lot of single core machines from the 2005-6 era, and it will be interesting to see if those devices can support Windows 8.

Nihil - as I have sold my gaming rig as im moving countries, are you able to test some games?
