    Question COPPA and finger prints / biometrics

    Does anyone know what the legal aspects are of capturing fingerprints from users that are under the age of 13? Does COPPA cover biometrics or are there biometric laws/rules posted somewhere?

    I'm asking in regard to an organization in the US that is using biometrics (fingerprints) for kids to sign in. They are often registering these fingerprints without parental approval. I'm curious if they are violating COPPA or any other acts.

    Thanks for any insights!

    (7) A persistent identifier that can be used to recognize a user over time and across different Web sites or online services. Such persistent identifier includes, but is not limited to, a customer number held in a cookie, an Internet Protocol (IP) address, a processor or device serial number, or unique device identifier;

    I don't like that persistent identifier being finger prints.

    Thanks. Both of the links provided help.

    It will be interesting to continue to watch the evolution of biometrics in security and identification. I'm amazed at the number of parents that are willing to allow the free release of things like finger prints (via scanners).

    Again, thanks for the responses.

    I wonder if the parents even know, let alone understand finger prints.!

    What about fingerprints being used for adults? Do you know if there are any guidelines with that?

    Thanks!
