I don't mean to be a wiseass, but if you use a dial-up connection and have call-waiting on your phone line, but don't disable the call-waiting feature in your dial-up (*70 here), if someone tries to call you while you're online, you'll get booted from your connection and your phone will ring.
Moral of the story: If you use dial-up, get a second phone line used only for the computer...most phone companies will cut you a deal if that's the case.

    Ok

What I was looking for was software that would enable me to at least know who called when I was online. And a system that would do it from within, and not one that would require me to sign up, even for free, with an outside service. All the programs I've seen, including those mentioned in the posts above, require the user to sign up with a service. It seems that it's just not posible to do all this from within the PC using one line.

    Have done

I combed that website good and proper. There's nothing there. All the answering machines take messages when the PC is NOT online. Do you have any idea of what that software was called?
