Linux has a sharp learning curve if your willing to spend the time and effort it will pay off in the end. get a good book and be prepared to **** up your comp a couple of times

The main reason I don't like Linux is the attitude of some of its users. I'm not an IT student, I'm not in the IT business, I'm just some (l)user who actually bothered, and didn't want to stick to Windows (I do know what DHCP is though - hell, I even use it).
If you tell someone you're using Linux nowadays, they'll tell you it's not 'cool' anymore, they'll tell you to go for BSD... Why? Don't know... I guess because Linux ain't their exclusive playground anymore (I mean: if I can install Linux, anyone can - with the exception of my mother). Masochists they are, some'll even tell you you're not cool because you run a GUI, or because you use a preset firewall: Noooooo, you need to configure it all yourself, preferably in text-mode (GUIs are too easy). What they don't seem to understand is that some people actually like ease-of-use, and don't wanna be bothered with permissions, tar-files, and compiling stuff before they can use it. I like it when I just have to click a file to make it work.

Experienced Windows users will keep on making fun of Windows newbies, Linux newbies will keep on making fun of Windows users, Linux gurus will keep on making fun of Linux newbies, BSD users will keep on making fun of Linux users...

red hot is to difficult for newbie in linux use mandrake cause it is easy to use and self explain sometimes . win me is carbage and use win 2000 cause it is the best and it is better than winxp. so holla back

I'm a fan of FreeBSD. merely because I enjoy a learning curve. I've installed the GUI, though it can be buggy with Radeon display boards. I like linux for the same thing, though most distros of Linux would install the GUI with great ease and never even make you look at the command line. I've just recently installed W2k, again, just to learn.

As an office replacement, there are suites like staroffice that offer most of the capabilities of M$ Office apps, though they can be buggy...

IMO, Windoze is easier to install, and has a wider range of abilities for end users. Linux and the BSD's are great for those learning the fundamentals of servers, wider abilities with networking and security.

However, none of the OS's are really all too secure if you don't work to maintain them.

I would recomend that you go with a dual boot. Have windows 98 or xp or 2000 on one partition and mandrake 8.2 on the other.

I have my system Dual booted with windows ME and Suse 7.3. I hate windows ME and will soon be changing it because of how bad it is. THe Suse is so much more stable than the ME, Im really becoming converted. I also found that the Suse is stightly slowler but the stability is much better. Suse is a nice distro IMO, if you by the box you get a load of books to start off with to get you into it, I am a total newbie to linux and I have enjoyed working with linux. Also Im a student, I produce alot of papers as well as typing up my notes, I find Star Office on Linux does evrything I need it to.

Can LINUX go mobile Plz? Also..... one question..... HOW THE HECK DO I INSTALL WINE IN COREL LINUX (DEBAIN)? Can WINE run my PC (windows) games like Ghost Recon and stuff? If it can, then MICROSOFT IS SO FREAKING SCREWED!
