A few days ago, there was this big fuss in India: a man died, and they burnt his body according to the ancient rites. No big deal, but there was someone else with him on the pyre: his wife. And no, she wasn't dead. She decided to follow her husband to "eternity". Indian police forces tried to stop the ritual, but were held back by the masses. A horrible death, indeed. But what amazed me most about that story is that the woman wasn't tied or anything. She was just laying there, undergoing horrible pains. She chose that over a life without her beloved one...
Her own choice... And she must have been determined, otherwise she couldn't have gone through that horrible pain. And her family? They were all very proud of her...
And anyone remember Jan Palach?
The Japanese Kamikaze-pilots?
The WTC-suicides?
Just saying that not only depressed people commit suicide... and that generally, if they choose such a horrible way to commit suicide as jumping in a crocodile pit, they must be very determined... be it a personal feeling, or the only way to make a statement, or a cultural thing, or because they've been brainwashed...
People committing suicide cowards? Allow me to disagree with that statement...
And about the drowning... I know people who get a kick out of holding their breath a little too long... supposed to make you feel, indeed, peaceful...

Negative makes a good point, as usual.
But, I think that there are a couple different classes of suicide being presented here.
Their is the "I hold to my beliefs and will die, even by my own hand, to uphold those beliefs" type.
And the,"life is **** and I don't want to go on" kind of suicide.
One is confronting the fear of death to preserve some kind of ideology.
The other is running in fear of life.
I'd say that there is a cowardly act here, but that there is also an incredibly courageous act as well.
No one would call a soldier that lept on a grenade to save his buddies a coward, but then no one would call the person that ate a bottle of pills because life got shitty courageous.
But, then there are possibly other ways to look at this.
No matter how miserable life gets, there will always be the possibility of something better, unless you end it and then all posibilities in this world end...
But, I babble, which is not unusual for me.
For me, I will live until I die, no longer and no shorter, (how's that for a tautology...)

Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem.
With great power comes great responsibility.

Suicide?
To suicide, is getting away from responsibility, problems, weakness,
To suicide, is to stop the beauty of God's gift,
To suicide, is to face God's punishment.
Better not to do it!!!

Type O Negative, Requiem for a souless man
I built myself a nice little cage with bars of anger and a lock of rage
I can't help asking who's got the key? when I know damned well it's me
No I ain't hinting for sympathy I'm used to dealing with apathy
The scars on my wrists may seem like a crime just wish me better luck next time
So what if I died a thousand deaths you think I'm insane but I have no regrets
One more time won't matter no question suicide is self expression.
Just thought I'd throw in my random quote for today...

Still, that's not the way to go. It had to hurt like hell. I mean, I could see myself being more likely to be depressed about life and popping some pills over psyching myself up to jump in water full of crocodiles......I don't know, maybe that's just me.
WARNING - DO NOT READ THIS MESSAGE it you are easily grossed out or are squeamish in any way, shape or form. I repeat, DO NOT read this if you are squeamish or have any sort of problems with bodily fluids/functions/whatver. I've even hidden this post to help guard against people not unintentionally reading it.
You have been warned...
Well, all ways are "a bad way to go" if you ask me... coming as an EMT (yes, I've held a certification for about ten years now) and someone "in" to the whole idea of alternative and "backcountry" medicine, they all seem to have some pretty heavy cons (as if death isn't "bad" enough, long and/or painful death is, in my opinion, worse).
In "popping pills" for example, well, if you don't get it right (and sometimes even if you "do"), you might end up going out from septic shock rather than the original intention. That is, picture trying to "do yourself in," only you don't get it right... instead you end up with a few days of severe nausea and vomiting (if you're even conscious) to the point of stomach acid and blood. If you're "lucky," perhaps you'll end up in a coma, slowly dying from drowning all of your bodily organs in the biologic equivalent of a sewer.
Basically you kill your liver to the point that it's unable to remove any of the pollutants from your blood - so it instead they build up until the point of toxicity... of course, this doesn't happen overnight - and I've been told that it's not exactly "painless." Literally, you're probably better off finding your local sewage treatment plant, jumping the gate, then tying a couple cinder blocks to your ankles before you jump in... a lot less painful and a whole lot faster.
