Thread: linux boot error (RH 7.3!)

Redhat also said that you need to lable each cd, CD 1, CD2 CD3. Does the lable of the cd rom mater or can he lable it anything?
I think you should follow the instructions given by Red Hat. CD 1, CD 2, and CD 3 will probably be referring to an order of files stored in the images. Basically meaning, that when the installation asks you insert CD 2, and you've labelled them randomly, then you're going to have to pop each CD into the drive and see which one actually IS CD 2. So be on the safe side, and label them accordingly.

There's no need to burn the boot.img to a CD. If you burn the ISO images properly, you can put anything else, anyway. The Red Hat CDs should be bootable if your hardware supports that, and if not you'll need to use the boot floppy like before.

I think maybe you're misunderstanding exactly how an ISO image works.... you can't just burn the file to a CD like any other file and expect it to work. It has to be burned in a special way, similar to when you use rawrite to make your boot disk. Most CD burning software will have a "make CD from image file" function (or something similar). Once you do that, the ISO becomes the CD, and not just a file on it.

The CD labels are only for your reference so you'll know which one to put in next.

Thanks so much, he said he may burn them tonight, good thing I read the message board because I dont want him to burn it the wrong way and find out its not useable.

I sent him a email with a breif message and a copy of your post, I did not include your nick name just what you wrote, so that he knows what to do. I also told him that he does not need to put the boot.img on the cd. And he needs to check for a feature to make CD with a image.

If his software does not have the feature to make a CD with a image file, is there another way to burn it?
