Thanks all, I have however fixed the problem by replacing the shoddy XP with 2000. Now runs perfectly!

i work for HP as well, but didn't face this problem befor, if i was at office i would have a better access to our tech support team, any way.. u have my support.
it's not a drives problem , thats for sure.
it could be a software problem.
go to start> settings>control panel>Admin tool> Event viewer
on the application tab, look to the right side
for sure u'll find under TYPE = Error with a red circle, why ... coz'it's a M$ product
and under the source u'll find ( Application hang ) ... as usual , everything hang
there u are , double click it , u'll find a description in there
read it well, if u could do anything about it , then go a head,
otherwise, call support center or pass by any HP ASP.
good luck, sorry i couldn't afford u more help, it's midnight now
