Well Atreides, it's not an overheat or something, that i can tell, for sure !
I also am sure that the application-click-then-restart is not just by co-incidence,
it is for true. There's somethin in the software.
And for the other ideas above, i havent gotten the chance yet to go to his house,
i will , for sure, and let ya in for a feedback sooner, ( or later ).

I know this is off topic... but while I had the chance, I'd throw a couple things in here.
Sorry invader for piggybacking your thread, but I didn't feel it needed its own.
side note: I used 98se for a while and I never new it had a system restore option, I wouldn't have bought GoBack if I knew it did.
Bludgen: Win98se doesn't have a system restore option. Only registry restore, which doesn't change the system files that have changed, only repairs/restores the registry.
The system restore didn't start until WinME. Though, Win2k didn't have it. It only has backup/restore. WinXP Pro has it too, though I'm not sure about XP Home.
The difference between system restore or "roll back" and backup/restore is, it creates a restore point when there is a system change in case you install a faulty driver or software that isn't compatable with your OS.
Backup/restore will only be good for you if you want to backup your data/system state to other media, such as cdrom, tape drive, or other hard drive. This will also back up your system state like the system restore does, except that it will be on external media and does a lot more than the system restore does.
BTW: using the backup/restore OFTEN is very good practice. I try to backup at least once every week or every other week on my home systems. The best way I have found to do this, is to simply install a second large hard drive and store all your backups on one drive and hope that it doesn't crash on you the same time as your other one. It is very inexpensive compared to a tape drive and faster. CDroms inexpensive but a pain to backup large systems because you have to keep changing the CDs out. I find doing backups in the middle of the night is best becasue it won't use your sytem resources when you are working on it. You getup and verify the integrity and viola, nice and easy backup. If you are backing up to media that is easily removed, you may want to encrypt that if there is sensitive info on it. It is very easy for CDs to grow legs, not to mention backup tapes. Hard drives are a little harder to grow legs.
Invader: Can you include a list of processes that are running, or take some screen shots of what is in the startup section in msconfig utility. That will help us help you better. Thanx!

Do a ctrl-alt-del and show us what processes are running. maybe we can figure it out from that. Do it right after all processes are loaded. do a print screen, paste it to a doc and attach for us.
if this is some kind of monitoring program i doubt very much it will show up in taskmanager as it will prolly be hidden.
but as people have said before if it is software based then it must have a hook somewhere to start it up when the computer starts.
maybe start looking at virii removal txt's alot of backdoors etc are programed to run hidden with multiple start-up methods.
look for removal files for the likes of subseven and they will talk thro removing programs from a variety of different start-ups - but obviously instead of looking for and subseven files look for ones which appear to be part of this software.

Good call Val,
Also, exactly what apps is he trying to load? Are they all requiring sound? Maybe there's a software conflict that's going on that overloads Windows and causes it to reboot when an app goes to run sound?
Try using a spyware scanner, while this might not be spyware, it's activities might be recognized as being similar and picked up?
Also, if he's trying to run apps like Winamp that are being monitored, reinstall the app in another directory and rename the .exe files so not to be picked up by the monitoring software...
*I've been checking through google for keywords like spy software, monitoring software and whatnot but haven't found much for this case (it's more like surveillance stuff, screen captures, forwards, loggers) but maybe trying to do this and you could find out what product is on the 'puter....
**Found a program called ENUFF, which sounds similar to this case... check it out... (It claims that it can't be bypassed...)
