My sister had the exact same problem yesterday, and while this is not an answer to your problem, she had no screen when the graphic card was installed and the tower was laying on its side on the bench.

Once stood up - on came the monitor, I was wondering if something was making contact with the back of the motherboard, (it is an old box that has been pulled apart a few times) effectively shorting something out. I haven't physically inspected her machine - so I can not confirm this.

    Definitely a strange one.

No post when it starts up all that happens is the CPU fan starts up and thats it. nothing else shows up. Monitor works good because it shows the (Monitor working check cable connection) box. Could it be the ATI card doesnt support AMD? I was told that all video cards have the same basic start up protocal. so I am stumped.

I thought the same thing that maybe it was grounding out but when I pulled the motherboard out and ran it from my desk top it still did the same thing. Another thing is this is a new system so it souldnt have shorting out problems yet.

If it won't POST it *could* be your RAM....make sure it's well seated.

yeah I checked the ram it calls for PC133 low density ram to start off with so I changed out my PC100 ram with a freinds PC133 which he had running in his computer so I sure it was all good. When I placed it in the system I tried it in both slots making sure it was set tightly. sorry if Im frustrating you all about my problem but thats where Im getting to. Going to make a nice boat anker soon.

Been there, felt that way too. When I built my current AMD box, I had to use CAS2 RAM to get it going....cheap RAM just wouldn't cut it in my ABIT board. Which brings me to my next question...what brand/model M/B is it?

does the box 'boot up' and run for about 10 - 20 seconds and then just shut down?
if thats the problem it is most likely your heatsink or fan stuff, i got a new AMD box and the heatsink wasnt properly attached, so when i took it back they testeed everything and then realised they had done somthing wrong with the heatsink, but im not quite sure what it was they did to it though

No it stays running. I wish I could figure this out because it starting to get on my nerves. Ive never had this much trouble with a computer before. Ive sent the motherboard back once already with this same problem, and I got a new one back but still haveing the same problem. Im going to buy a new video card AGP style and see if that will fix it. If it doesnt then Ill have to call them and find out how they exactly test these systems. Like what card they use and what ram they are running in there systems.

Just to clarify my earlier question, what brand and model of motherboard do you have? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think your last reply was the types of RAM you've tried.
