Well AciDriveHB, too bad they couldn't keep you off the path to the darkside But we like you anyway. I certainly took no offense at anything you have said. I agree that the school should use this incident to check their security and flaws in the way things are going.

Most of us in this field know that all too often the first time you know about a hole in your security is when it is exploited. Reading through these comments here I think we all are in basic agreement.

    Boy did wrong
    Boy deserves punishment
    Degree of punishment is debatable
    Administration's response is debatable
District Attorney's response is over the top

I believe many of us have felt the uneven hand of justice in a beauracracy whether it be in school, at work, or the IRS. I do not think this is fully a modern phenomenon but the extremes in some ways are. American society seems so eager to blame anyone in authority that they are afraid to use discretion and instead cover themselves by strictly following the rules in all cases. I know this may seem controversial but I believe this stems from our acceptance of the Justice system making new law through civil and criminal court cases. This has led to everyone fearing that every action will bring retribution and possible ruin. So instead of taking a risk at being fair they instead make sure they are protected by the rules. This 11 year old boy is learning that lesson well. Even if his spelling is sub-standard I am sure he will never forget how to spell CYA again.

I agree totally with what you are saying, and I think you have stated it very well!
