I know of someone who got a mod chip in their Xbox and installed Linux. He's running a Counter-Strike server off it right now. Apparently MS didn't like it much and banned his serial number from Xbox Live though.

Yeah this is very interesting, a xbox runs for about ~$200, a powerful GPU, Proccessing speed is at $700, with an internal HD, ad a built in ethernet, add a mouse, k/b ad get a a a/v porter for your monitor and you can switch between simultaneously working Xbox'es. Then you ca have a cheap pc, after you get the extras around $250 ad you got yourself a nice working machine.
Also there are some links to follow for this type of information.
www.xboxhacker.com
http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/
I am sure there is more.
Also there is some guy at Lindows (www.lindows.com) offering a whoopig $100,000 to anyone who can configure the Xbox to run Linux the easiest without any mods. (Currently it is a very complex process)
I am seriously thinkig about buying some Xboxes, to run a some linux webservers, and yes a counter strike server would run great with this.
I checked out the terms in Xbox, at a glance, but MODDED xboxes will be banned form Xbox live, but no mention of having a different OS on your box.
I havented look into this but a 2 days now, is there any way to get on the net w/o Xboix live?
Cheers kOc

Some one has beaten the X-Box hacking challenge by finding a loophole in a 007 save/load game screen. Aparently you can load any software from there that you want, using a sort of buffer overflow. This is all done without a mod chip. The second part of the $100,000 contest is still up for the first to get a working version of linux up on an un-moded xbox. you can find more information at:

i know that this is a little old school, but i just put linux on my sega dreamcast. it doesn't have nearly the power an xbox has (hard drive, 200mhz processor) but it's still kinda cool to boot it up. plus the console and keyboards are dirt cheap. you can get info at

or message me if you're interested
