I like C/C++ and Java. C is small and fast. C++ extends C with OOP features as well as a few others. Java code can be really clean. My personal favorite would have to be C++.

C++ is the best for universal programs that work with most all OS's and is widely accepted in business, but it really depends on your experience.. as C is a very hard language to learn, if you are new to programming try visual c or visual basic it can be alot more user friendly.. also it will have you creating your own programs in no time.. a great place to start for programming newbies as it will lay the foundation to harder languages, lastly visual basic is good because it wont make you give up as easily!
