window's shut down pop up

i have a firewall, norton, and i also ran a full system virus scan, still nothing. i would use THECLEANER, but i previusly used it, and its a free 30days, and it won't let me 'try' it again for another 30 days. but thanks to everyone here, u've been such a help to me, if anyone has more info, or suggestions please feel free to post it, and help me out.

Are you logging security events, such as successful logons? If not, you might turn it on and look at the events near one of these system messages.

theyortiscool it sure sounds to me like someone is using the remote shutdown utility. one comes with nt utils pack, systernals has one and one can easily be made using WMI. If it was a problem with the system i dont think it wouldn't give you that message. change all your passwords including that of the administrator account then check your firewall settings. make sure port 135 isn't allowed in. this is the RPC port the shutdown util uses.

OKAY my friend.............I am not an expert in this area, but I would suggest that you try "Webroot Spy Sweeper", to check out any spyware you might have (I also use adaware and spybot, but suggest you find this other one as well).......then find the PC-cillin website and run their housecall on your system. This should give you the confidence that it is not malware.

Then go into your BIOS setup and switch off any powersaving crap or whatever.

Go into settings, and get rid of any screensavers (screensaver + antivirus = fun), and kill any powersaving options....set it to "never" and "always on"
I bet you find one of the settings is ten minutes

Now that we have ringfenced it, try rebooting.

If this does not work...go to WIN2000 Pro??????????????????

Don't panick you are getting MSN net Alerts there is a way to stop them cuz they realy pisss you off don't they. Got to find out how though cuz i don't remember.

Ok i found it. This is a cut and past job:
Disable Messenger Service
Click Start > Run and type "services.msc" (no quotes) in the Open: line and click OK

In the right pane, scroll down to Messenger.

Double click Messenger and click the General tab.

Under Service Status: click the Stop button.

In the Startup Type: drop down box, select Disable.

Click Apply and OK.

Have you tried disconnecting it from the internet??? If you do and it still shuts down then you will know its something running on your machine and if it does not then it is something remotely sending your box a shutdown command.
