Well for you problem then..
Bookmark www.virtualdr.com for your hardware probs windoze problems
and now that you have found your device manager..
Right click the cd rom in device manager and select Remove.. ok and ok out
restart the computer..
once restarted.. go back into device manager and check the status of the cd rom..
you could have a faulty drive, bad cable.. or there is more information you need to tell us..

Also at the time it did seem like a Security problem. I mean I do want security with my CD-ROM.
hehe i like ur way of thinking. Looks like most of ur questions r pretty much answered...hope ur problem gets fixed. What brand of CDROM is it?

That happened to me too with my DVD-Rom, I rebooted the system and it showed up again. Perhaps some Spyware might interfere with it...or it could be just a coincidence cuz i ran Spyware S&D and after deleted some crap it showed again. How long has it been gone?
