It's intriguing to me, how for YEARS this has been a huge issue amongst people. Non-believers were dubbed witches or warlocks and killed years ago, people were shunned from their homes for not believing. Let's face the fact that religion has been around for SO long, that the battle between faith and atheism will always linger. All of us atheists who've been posting in this forum, we've made our points very well and quite clear... and all the believers, you've come back with some great rebuttles as well. But I'm definately sticking with my atheist view on things.

I agree, organized religeon and a persons faith are two seperate things. I think everyone, except possibly the most loyal athiests have some kind of faith deep in their hearts. That at least somthing somewhere is out there is watching over us. It connects deep with our most basic insticts, that feeling of comfort and security. Faith and hope (in any shape and form) are universal feelings that are most definitely good... it sure keeps me from going crazy at times.

Does no-one else find it absolutely hillarious that the posts "Do you believe in God" and "Do you believe in Athiests" are right next to each other? I sure do!

knocker... yeah I tend to agree that hope is one of the most universal survival instincts... probably faith was born out of the hope that something of us does survive after we go into the grave...
loss of hope is probably one of the most terrible things anyone has to endure....
actually doesn't it say somewhere in the bible that the greatest gift God gave was hope???

close, but:
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Today, "charity" is often translated as "love"
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT!!!!!
The belief in God is not about the materialistic world we live in now but the eternal world we will go to when we die. Do you honestly believe that all the good things that you have done will be thrown away and forgotten, or all the bad things you've done will go unpunished. There is a reason why we are here that science WILL NEVER be able to explain. Isn't it strange that Earth is the ONLY planet that can support human life. Isn't it strange that people like Gandi and Mother Theresa and Jesus die for something many people don't even believe.
I don't know how we got here and I really don't care because that's not what religion is about. Religion is something that few mortals grasp, and even fewer understand. Religion is finding the inner peace(soul) in one self.
One kind act done to a single heart is better than a thousand heads bowed in prayer. - Gandhi
Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own, todays worries are enough for today. - Matthew 6.34

WOW someone gets it, faith has nothing to do with the material world but resides in the speritual one. Sicence and faith are not in opposition, but dewell in such difrent worlds that they are seperate but not excluseive.
On a side note syphon, earth isn't the only planet that can sustain lief (probably). at one point mars could have (and may still). We know nothing about possable life in other solar systems
Who is more trustworthy then all of the gurus or Buddha’s?

syphon, I really believe you meant faith. There should be, I guess, a clear separation of the meanings of the two terms in anybody's mind.

I believe faith is the foundation of religion, but if you have infinite faith and are a horrible person, you might as well be faithless.
