    You can block a lot of stuff without installing any software.
    you will need to modify a file on your system, caled hosts
    There are lots of places that give tutorials on how to do this.

    HERE IS A TYPICAL ONE.

    The hosts file contains a list of ip addresses and their corresponding
    hostnames. An entry like this
    Code:
    127.0.0.1        foobar.com
    gives the numerical address of 127.0.0.1 for the fictitious site foobar.com.
    You can decide for yourself who you want to block, or copy and paste whole lists
    of ad sites (like the list at the above site).

    Since the address 127.0.0.1 is a "loopback" address to your own computer
    Your browser will not find the ads from any site (indeed not find the site at all)
    if its name is pointed to 127.0.0.1

    Research the background of this info by doing a google search for hosts file
    I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

    I installed the Google Toolbar on my Windows PC and I am very impressed with its performance in IE. The toolbar offers many options, many I myself will not need but to some it may be very useful. Why hasn't MS implemented a pop-up blocker into their browser yet? Wait, nevermind....that would be a good idea, MS tends to avoid those at all costs.

    Try the Outpost firewall software. It can block ads including popups.
    You can add pesky sites to it. I have been using this for six months
    now with no problems. I also use Firebird for most browsing.
    Using these two will solve 95%at least of your problems.

    For stopping browser pop-ups try Opera -> www.opera.com
    For stopping messenger popups try installing zonealarm -> www.zonelabs.com
    and disable access to and from the netbios ports, that is ports 137 through 139.

    Alternatively

    Fdisk the machine -> www.fdisk.com
    Install a flavour of Linux -> www.linuxiso.org.
    Keyboard not detected. Press F1 to continue.

    For stopping pop-up browser windows, Netscape 7.1 works great. It blocks all the popups I don't want and I can tell it to allow popups from things like webmail and online banking by specifying which sites to allow.

    Another option is a firewall. ZoneAlarm can do this quite well, and they have a free version. I think the free version does it too, but I don't know for sure. I have the pro version that came with my router. Check out some firewalls and maybe upgrade your browser for browser popups.

    For the messenger popups (the ones which start with "Message from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:", disable the messenger service. You don't need another program running to do this. I have included a screenshot with made with Win2000 which should explain how.

    oops... hold up a minute... looks like the file was damaged in my recent HDD crash...

    there... that's better.
